With the world’s best golfers arriving in the capital this week for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, event organisers, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has enlisted the support of Takatof, the social volunteering programme, to assist in providing volunteers for the showpiece event.
This will be the first time Takatof volunteers will support the nine-year-old tournament at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, where their roles will vary from marshalling and stewarding to leaderboard operators and being tasked with measuring the lengths of the player’s tee shots. All volunteers will get to know the game of golf and crucially gain invaluable experience of working within a team environment, a highly transferable skill to both their school and working lives.
Launched in 2007 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Takatof was set up to nurture a culture of volunteering within the UAE. The programme have already impacted various projects within the country with Takatof volunteers working on diverse campaigns including school renovations, aiding those with special needs and undertaking administrative tasks at hospitals and health centres.
Jean Iggo, Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, commented: “Takatof support will add another element to an already diverse group of Championship volunteers. Personally, I am looking forward to collaborating with a project that has a positive effect across the whole of the UAE.”
Takatof volunteers will be joined by 150 volunteers from local schools, including the Al Raha International, Al Yasmina, Abu Dhabi International and American Community schools. Approximately 450 volunteers, encompassing all ages and with some travelling from abroad, will support the Championship, which runs January 16-19.
Long standing volunteers Terry and Frances Horobin will return to Abu Dhabi from England for their eighth championship. Terry says the Championship’s unique ‘up-close-and-personal’ characteristic continues to draw him back: “As golfers, undoubtedly the biggest thrill is being able to walk the fairways within touching distance of some of the world’s top players,” he said. “We feel we are only a small, yet important part, of the huge volunteer team, all which play a part in ensuring the smooth running of this prestigious event.”
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority and runs at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
