SEHA Pilots Enhanced Patient Registration System - Malaffi..my Scan - At Tawam Hospital
(7 January 2014)

The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA) today announced plans to introduce its new, more secure, patient registration system called “Malaffi..my scan. The system, which scans patients’ palms and recognizes the unique individual pattern of blood vessels beneath the skin, will be trialed at Tawam Hospital in January, 2014 prior to rolling it out across all clinics and hospitals in the SEHA network. Tawam Hospital will be the first medical facility in the UAE to use the enhanced registration system.

George Yacoub, (A)Group Chief Information Officer from SEHA says, “The new enhancement to the Malaffi registration system, “my scan”, uses technology that scans the vein patterns in the patient’s palm to generate a unique numeric ID for the patient. Once a patient is enrolled and a unique ID is generated, the system matches the unique ID associated with the patient to their medical record in a matter of seconds. Registration staff will ask for the patient’s Date of Birth as a second identifier to complement the biometric check. This will enhance the patient’s service by speeding up the registration process and will ensure the right patient is identified and is receiving the right healthcare, treatment medications and all other related services.”

The two-factor patient identification system is endorsed by the “Joint Commission for Patient Safety”, which sets up and monitors the implementations of the highest international standards in hospital operations and patient safety. Tawam Hospital patients will be enrolled in the new Malaffi “my scan” system during their next hospital visit.

George Yacoub added “Once a patient is enrolled, the Malaffi “my scan” system allows us to identify patients and access their full medical records, even if they are brought in during an emergency and are un conscious or unable to verbally respond. This would help save vital time and provide critical information that will enable our clinicians to administer the most appropriate treatment to the patient in what can often be life threatening or near-death situations.”

Based on the positive feedback from the pilot program at Tawam Hospital, it is expected that a full rollout of the Malaffi “my scan” system will begin across all SEHA network of clinics and hospitals in 2014.

He added: “After enrollment, the patient registration process will be simpler, faster and straightforward, only taking a matter of minutes to complete. However, as with the introduction of any new system, it is important that we explain to our patients why we are introducing such systems and how patients will benefit from these new enhancements. We look forward to receiving valuable feedback form staff and patients at Tawam Hospital, which will be shared with colleagues from other SEHA facilities to help them when the new system is rolled out at their facilities.”
