Getting Into The Swing: More Than Just Golf For Families And Fashionable Friends
(1 January 2014)

Organisers of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship have unveiled an action-packed programme of super exciting events and activities to run throughout the tournament, which runs 16 – 19 January 2014 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) and title sponsor HSBC have spectator fun and entertainment beyond The National course’s rolling fairways giving championship-goers more reasons to attend.

The opening day – Thursday - welcomes its first ever ‘Mini Falcons’ Day Out’ where mums and kids enter free and enjoy all-day entertainment in the HSBC Interactive Zone and HSBC World of Sport, including face painting and games and there’ll be great prizes for the best golf-inspired dressed youngsters. Thrill-seekers and water-lovers will have the chance to learn more about the upcoming, round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race during a session with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s skipper Ian Walker in the Championship Village.

The ever-popular ‘Ladies Day’ returns on Friday with ‘Hello! Middle East’s’ society photographers hunting for the best-dressed woman who will take home an all-inclusive trip-of-a-lifetime to Bangkok, courtesy of The St. Regis Saadiyat Island and Etihad Airways. Fans will also have the chance, on Friday, to quiz 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley during a session in the Championship Village.

The fringes of The National Course will also be awash with Championship red as fans and supporters rally on Saturday for ‘Splash of Red Day.’ Spectators wearing red clothing - from suits and shirts, to socks and skirts – gain free entry.

Also adding to the huge Championship appeal will be enhanced hospitality chalets, offering a truly five-star experience, new and improved spectator platforms to deliver true ‘up-close viewing’, and a substantially expanded Championship Village with even more attractions and competitions.

The Championship Village will be packed with casual dining options and family-friendly entertainment alongside an abundance of surprise activities and appearances from star players and celebrity sports personalities. Visitors are encouraged to dig out their autograph books and keep their eyes peeled as golfing superstars will be cropping up at unexpected moments for daily surprise signing sessions.

Fans of all ages and abilities will test their sports skills in the hugely popular HSBC World of Sport. From golf, rugby, cricket or tennis, there is literally something for everyone with HSBC ambassadors and sporting legends Tim Henman and George Gregan on hand for some free tips each day.

Village visitors can also learn new skills including Meat & Livestock Australia BBQ master classes or design their own personalised sunglasses, thanks to new sponsor, Oakley, and enjoy eye-catching performances from the World Famous Trick Shot Boys. Over in the TCA Abu Dhabi Heritage Pavilion, visitors can enter a competition to win a team-signed Manchester City shirt complete with its certificate of authenticity.

HSBC Global Head of Sponsorship and Events Giles Morgan said: “HSBC’s ambition is to open up the world of golf and through our Interactive Village we bring together all the ingredients required to excite and attract families, avid golfers and those completely new to the game.

“We give fans the chance to go beyond being a mere spectator. They have the chance to live the event and enjoy an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s picking up a golf club, a tennis racquet or even a cricket bat - it’s all part of a great family day out.”

The Championship has again attracted a stunning competitive field, which includes five of the world’s top 10 players. Headlining the Championship will be ‘Super Swede’ and world number three Henrik Stenson, world number four and US Open title-holder Justin Rose, world number five and five-time Major winner Phil Mickelson, world number six Rory McIlroy, former world number one Luke Donald, Abu Dhabi’s record-breaking ambassador Matteo Manassero, world number 10 Sergio Garcia and reigning Champion, Welshman Jamie Donaldson. Three-time Abu Dhabi champion Martin Kaymer also returns for his fourth shot at the title.

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. Tickets and packages are available via the event’s official website - www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com - and Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.ae), at AED50 for a daily pass and AED150 for a four-day pass. Guests staying at any Abu Dhabi hotel over the Championship period enter free.
