Turkish Airlines has announced the appointment of Mehmet Akalin as general manager of the global carrier’s operations in Abu Dhabi. Akalin will be responsible for developing and leading Turkish Airlines growth strategy in the UAE’s capital with a focus on operations, sales and marketing.
Having begun his career with Turkish Airlines in 2004 as a marketing and sales specialist, Akalin has held various positions with Turkey’s national carrier over the last 10 years. Most recently, he moved from Switzerland where he was based for three years, from 2010 - 2013, as general manager for the airline in Basel and undertook similar operational and marketing responsibilities.
His international experience also spanned Austria where he resided from 2007-2010 as a commercial manager working primarily on ticket sales and executing marketing activities through various sales channels. Based in Vienna, his role also included managing operations at the airport and gaining key administrational qualifications before his promotion and subsequent move to Switzerland.
Murat Bas, Vice President Marketing & Sales for Turkish Airlines in Middle East & Cyprus said: “The UAE is a key market for Turkish Airlines and we are delighted to have Mr. Akalin onboard to drive our operations forward in Abu Dhabi, particularly as we sustain our growth momentum in the region.”
Turkish Airlines added two additional weekly flights from Abu Dhabi this year, bringing the total to six weekly, connecting passengers to more countries than any other airline with 243 destinations across 105 countries. The airline, voted Europe’s Best at 2013 Skytrax Awards for the 3rd year running, has also seen a 46 per cent increase in passenger traffic in Abu Dhabi from January to November compared to the same period last year.
Before starting his career with Turkish Airlines, Akalin graduated from Istanbul Technical University as an Electrical Engineer in 2004, and studied Economics in Anadolu University.
