Under the patronage of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the annual GCC Unified Inmates’ Week will be celebrated for the second year in the UAE under the slogan “Take my Hand towards a Better Future”. It will be taking place from 8th – 11th December with the participation of all GCC countries.

This was announced by Brigadier Hamad Adeel Al Shamesi, Director General of Correctional and Punitive Establishments at the Ministry of Interior during the press conference he held on Wednesday in the conference room of the Directorate General of the Punitive and Correctional Establishments in Abu Dhabi.

Brigadier Al Shamesi noted that the opening ceremony will take place this upcoming Sunday at the Directorate General of the Punitive and Correctional Establishments in Dubai, and will be attended by a number of officials and directors of Punitive and Correctional Establishments at the State level.

Brigadier Al Shamesi indicated that in support of the efforts and multiple achievements in the various areas of security cooperation among GCC countries, particularly in the area of the punitive and correctional system among the GCC members States, the GCC Ministers of Interior have decided to celebrate the Unified GCC Inmates Week in December of each year. “This would boost public confidence in the continuous efforts to achieve the Punitive and Correctional Establishments’ vision and mission, to reform and rehabilitate inmates and integrate them into society, ultimately leading to safe and stable societies,” added Brigadier Al Shamesi.

Adding further, Brigadier Al Shamsi stressed that the Unified GCC Inmates Week aims to spread the culture of post-release care and the need to integrate released inmates into society. Furthermore, he underscored the need for concerted efforts between various government and private institutions in the reform process, to change social perception towards inmates and their families, and integrate inmates into society.

The Director General of Correctional and Punitive Establishments reiterated the commitment of the Directorate General of Punitive and Correctional Establishments at the Ministry of Interior to strengthen coordination and cooperation with strategic partners. “The Directorate General of Punitive and Correctional Establishments is also keen to review world countries’ experiences, exchange information and knowledge to be used across the Punitive and Correctional Establishments’ work system,” noted Al Shamesi.

Al Shamesi indicated that the Correctional and Punitive Establishments at the countrywide level will organize a number of social, cultural, artistic, sports and professional activities, programs and events. A number of Correctional and Punitive Establishments’ officers will be dispatched to GCC Countries to review their experiences, leverage their expertise and exchange information in the field of Punitive and Correctional Establishments’ field across the GCC countries.

For his part, Colonel Abdul Hakim Saeed Al Suwaidi, Trustee of the Faraj Fund, briefed the attendees on the Fund’s achievements and its charitable activities since its inception. He also highlighted the Fund’s participation in the previous GCC Inmates Week and the positive outcomes of such participation. Colonel Al Suwaidi also affirmed the Fund’s participation in this year’s GCC Inmates Week.

Colonel Al Suwaidi noted that the Fund has supported inmates’ families and contributed to the release of a number of eligible inmates. He also pointed out that the Fund has provided assistance to approximately 140 inmates’ families last year. Concluding, he pointed out to cases that do not meet the Fund’s eligibility requirements, which are referred to charitable institutions.

At the end of the press conference, the Director General of Correctional and Punitive Establishments at the Ministry of Interior expressed his appreciation for the high leadership’s constant support to the Punitive and Correctional Establishments, through the Faraj Fund, which provides support for inmates and their families. He also thanked the media representatives for their attendance and interaction with the directorate general, being key partners to convey the message, vision, and goals of the Punitive and Correctional Establishments to community members. Finally, the floor was opened for journalists’ questions and inquiries.

Attending the press conference were Brigadier Sami Hareb Al Munthari, Head of the Support Services Department; Colonel Dr. Yusuf Rashed Al Hamidi, Head of the Policies and Standards Department; and Colonel Mohammed Shamekh Ali Al Badi; Head of the Inspection and Control Department. Also present were Colonel Ali Saeed Al Zayoudi, Head of the Sentences Execution and Prisoners Affairs Department at the Directorate General of Punitive and Correctional Establishments of the Ministry of Interior; and Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Al Khajah, Deputy Director of the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
