The second edition of “Political Awareness Forum for University Students” concluded its activities at the United Arab Emirates University heretoday (November 27, 2013). The Forumwas aimed atraising the interest of students in public affairs, and enhancing their role in political participation, especially in the electoral process.
The second day of the Forum began with a session on “Political empowerment and its impact on the performance of the Federal National Council”,whichdiscussed the empowerment programme launched by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the occasion of the 34th National Day in 2005. The session also highlighted the aim of the empowerment programmewhich is to bring the FNC closerto the citizens in order to meet all their needs.
The session was moderated by Dr. Atiq Jkah, political science professor at the UAE University.The speakers were H.E. Dr Mohamed Salem Al Mazroui, Secretary-General of the Federal National Council, H.E. Ahmed Alkhateri,chief of Ras Al Khaimah Courts and a former member of the Federal National Council, H.E. Dr. Ahmed Alkhzimi, Director of the Institute for Officer Training at the School of Abu Dhabi Police,and Fatima Misbah Rumaithi,a student at the UAE University.
The second session was on “Voluntary work in the UAE community and its role in promoting the values of political participation”. The discussions focused on the importance of volunteer work in modern societies, and the development of volunteer work in the UAE.The session also helped clarify therole of volunteer work in supporting community issues and strengthening the values of political participation among the various segments of the society.
The second day included two workshops.The first one onelectoral process,under the title “Building the electoral capabilities of students”,was aimed at enhancingthe role of students inpolitical participation, especially in theelectoral process.The workshop wasmoderated by H.E. Tariq Hilal Lootah , Undersecretary of the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs.
The second workshop, which discussed formation of political awareness under the title “Social networks and political culture”, tried to evaluatethe content of some social networking sites and its role in shaping political awareness of young people.The workshop was moderatedby Dr. Saeed Al Ghafli, Assistant Undersecretary for Federal National Council Affairs, Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs.
The Forum concluded its activities withthe final session which was moderated by H.E. Dr. Mohammed bin Houidn, head of the political science department at the UAE University. The final session summed up the discussions and debates that took place in plenary sessions and the training workshops.
