The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate recently announced that a number of new radars will be operated on eight roads in Abu Dhabi, as of Monday. This comes in line with the Directorate’s traffic safety strategy represented by the priority of making roads safer, and support efforts to curtail all causes that lead to traffic accidents and the mortalities and serious injuries resulting from them.
Captain Ahmed Abdullah Al Muhairi, Head of Traffic Safety Section at the Traffic Engineering and Safety Department in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police, confirmed that the new installed radars cover the trucks’ road in Mussafah and the trucks’ road from Al Maqtaa Bridge to Mojamaa Al Josoor-Abu Dhabi- Al Ain – Umm Al Nar- Al Raha Beach Road- Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid street- Abu Dhabi International Airport- Sweihan Road.
He indicated that the new radars have been installed within a comprehensive plan that aims to improve traffic safety in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, since "road safety is everyone’s responsibility." He also noted that the plan included developing of a comprehensive strategy to manage speeds, organize awareness and control campaigns, and increase the number of automatic control devices on both internal and external roads. These measures aim to detect traffic law violators, and the efforts contributed to reduce the number of serious accidents resulting from over speeding in 2012 by 21%. It also pushed drivers to reduce their speeds and therefore reducing the resulting human, economic, and social losses across the Emirate.
Al Muhairi also indicated that the aim of operating the new radars is to primarily maintain drivers’ safety and enhance compliance with traffic laws. This, in turn, leads to reducing speeds that represent a great risk on drivers and road users as well, in case the driver failed to control his vehicle.
“The Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters seeks no financial gains by issuing traffic violations. This measure aims solely to ensure people’s safety and to maintain public property, as evidence has shown that most traffic accidents occur as a result of a traffic violation,” he added.
Furthermore, he called upon drivers to focus on self-control stemming from the sense of responsibility to respect the law, maintain the rights of other road users, abide by speed limits on roads, and pay attention not only to avoid radar violations, but also to maintain the safety of drivers and other road users as well.
Concluding, he urged drivers and road users to strengthen efforts by adhering to traffic laws and the designated speed limits, in support of Abu Dhabi’s vision to achieve zero road fatalities by the year 2030 – “Zero Vision”; in addition to the positive results achieved during the period (2010-2012), notably the reduce in the number of traffic accidents with injuries (33%), mortalities (34%), and serious injuries (25%).
