BAE Systems, silver sponsor of the 10th Al Ain Aerobatic Show, will be bringing a World War II Spitfire aircraft to the event – the biggest sporting extravaganza in Abu Dhabi’s Oasis City - adding retro-glamour to the sky high line up at the Al Ain International Airport from November 30-December 2.
The British single-seat fighter aircraft, that was used by the British Royal Air Force and other Allies during World War II, will be on static display at the show organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi). Representatives from the Royal Air Force Museum in the UK will also be available to talk about the history of the aircraft.
BAE Systems manufactures the Hawk trainer aircraft used by both the UK Red Arrows and the Royal Saudi Air Force display teams who will demonstrate their aerial prowess at the show. The Hawk is used by the UAE military and other Gulf states as an advanced trainer and light attack aircraft. BAE Systems will also display a full-scale replica of the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft and a Typhoon cockpit.
The show, which this year will be the biggest on-ground family entertainment integral to the 42nd UAE National Day weekend celebrations, will go beyond appealing to aviation buffs, according to Sultan Al Muhairi, General Co-ordinator for Al Ain Aerobatic Show 2013.
“This is a show for aviation enthusiasts and the entire family,” he said. “While visitors can expect a total sensory upgrade with four elite military teams and seven daredevil pilots from three continents presenting superior aerobatic skills, we also have a full on-ground activation of events for all ages. BAE Systems’ Spitfire aircraft is bound to be a huge hit with kids given its interesting heritage.”
The Spitfire’s iconic status is attributed to its use in the Battle of Britain from July-October 1940 as as a British Royal Air Force fighter. Subsequently, it became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command, and saw action in Europe, the Mediterranean, Pacific and South-East Asia.
“We are delighted to be participating once again in the Al Ain Aerobatic Show this year as a Silver sponsor,” said Steve Wearden, Business Development Executive, BAE Systems. “The UAE is an important partner for BAE Systems and by supporting this important air show we look forward to showcasing to the UAE our strength in the skies, starting from theWorld War II Spitfire, the BAE Systems Hawk used by the daring Red Arrows, and our latest generation fighter aircraft, the Eurofighter Typhoon.”
