UAE Energy Minister opens the NNIC highlighting the strategic importance of nuclear energy in meeting the Nation’s future energy needs.
His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy officially opened today the inaugural New Nuclear International Conference (NNIC) in Abu Dhabi. During the inaugural session, His Excellency welcomed nuclear energy leaders from around the world and outlined the critical role that nuclear energy will play in achieving the UAE’s energy security and sustainability ambitions.
“In the UAE, we are moving decisively forward with an energy portfolio that is adequately diversified, and balances our need for a constant and growing electricity supply with our responsibility to implement cleaner, low-carbon technologies,” said H.E. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei.
“The UAE peaceful nuclear energy program is a project of strategic importance for our nation and is a major step forward in the achievement of a long term-driven energy portfolio that guarantees security of supply and dependable electricity,” added H.E. Al Mazrouei.
Mohamed Al Hammadi, ENEC CEO also addressed the NNIC delegates during the inaugural session. In his speech, Mr. Al Hammadi highlighted the importance of conferences such as the NNIC to provide a platform for nuclear energy officials and energy policy makers from nations around the world to discuss a new future for nuclear energy, as it is a unique technology that is able to provide clean and reliable electricity to responsible nations around the world.
“It is encouraging to see that 34 countries are being represented at this conference. This gives a renewed momentum to nuclear energy projects around the world,” said Mr. Al Hammadi. “We are here today to demonstrate our adherence to one of the key pillars that form the foundation of the nuclear energy industry: to continue to improve and to learn from our colleagues in doing so. This is why I am particularly glad to announce that our program to safely deliver four nuclear energy plants, pending regulatory approval, has achieved 23% completion rate and that our first two units are already 35% completed and are being constructed safely, on time and within budget.”
“The nuclear energy sector has also made significant improvements in the efficiency of the construction of power plants while continuing to comply with strict safety and security regulations. In the case of the UAE peaceful nuclear energy program, modular construction, intelligent and efficient management and a close collaboration between the project owner and its prime contractor have been key in keeping the project on time and on budget,” said Mr. Al Hammadi.
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporations (ENEC) announced recently the successful installation of the Containment Liner Plate (CLP) in the Reactor Containment Building for Barakah Unit 1. The CLP is one of the many defense-in-depth barriers that ensure the safety of nuclear energy plants.
During the four-day NNIC conference participants will have the opportunity to learn the latest from the nuclear energy sector and engage with some of the most important stakeholders in the nuclear energy sector, including senior officials from KEPCO, Westinghouse and Areva.
Hosted by The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), the conference is being held under the theme of Bringing the Nuclear World Together. The event is a unique opportunity for nuclear energy experts from around the world to share best practice and to stay up to date on the industry’s developments. Delegates will learn how the nuclear energy sector has excelled in ensuring that the technology is safe and secure. The sessions will show that the industry’s commitment to safety and quality has raised the bar and is inspiring other industries across the world.
The NNIC is presented by the USA’s Goodnight Consulting, in partnership with ENEC, and organized by the USA’s Carlisle Events. The event is taking place at the Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal and will end on 14 November.
