Most young people in the UAE are aware of the important role of the Federal National Council (FNC) in the society and are satisfied with its performance, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs in collaboration with the Higher Colleges of Technology under the title, ‘Political Awareness Among Young Emiratis’.
Up to 95% of students surveyed stated that they were aware about the important role of the Federal National Council in the society, while 70% of them expressed satisfactionon the performance of the FNC, and 68.5% were satisfied about selection process of the members of the Council.
The surveyalso showed that 64% of students were interested in social improvement, 19% in economic development, and 17 % in political development. Up to85% of students in the survey were in favour of using an electronic voting system, and 75% of the participants expressed their interest to vote in the upcoming elections.
“The ministry seeks to enhance a culture of political participation among community members within its strategic objectives, and is working to achieve them through various initiatives and activities,” said H.E. Tariq Hilal Lootah, Undersecretary of the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs. “The youth is one of the most important target segmentsfor the Ministry and we are keen to develop political awareness among them,” H.E. Lootah added.
Pointing to the high percentage of political awareness among university students as shown in the survey, H.E.Lootah said avariety of awareness programmes have been carried out by the ministry in cooperation with authorities concerned to create a generation capable ofeffective participationin diverse areas of national action.
Up to 1,650 students below 25 years participated in the survey conducted online. It included 13 questions about the Federal National Council, Council Elections in 2011 and their political aspirations, and targeted the students in Higher Colleges of Technology in all the Emirates.
