Al Ain Zoo today debuted its completed refurbished facilities, presenting guests with an array of additional entertaining, interactive, and educational activities. The renovations also saw new and upgraded exhibits and dining choices, not only enriching visitor experiences butalso giving guests the opportunity to learn more aboutarid wildlife and conservations issues.
Commenting on the announcement, Ghanim Al Hajeri, Director General of Al Ain Zoo said:
“Board members of The Zoo & Aquarium Public Institution in Al Ain, headed by His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan,are committed to enhancing visitor experiences, providing services that will not only entertain but educate. Al Ain Zoo is home to a diverse collection of approximately 4,000 animals from all over the world, including many rare and endangered species and arid wildlife that are native to the UAE. Visitors can witness these animals interacting first-hand, and also learn about the importance of their conservation.”
As a leading tourist destination, Al Ain Zoo supports the Abu Dhabi Government’s 2030 visionand related efforts to promote the UAE overall. The zoo is a key part of the overall tourist experience, contributing to the steady growth of Al Ain’s tourism sector while also educating youth about wildlife. Education is an integral component of Al Ain Zoo’s vision, andis being promoted through a range of activities, facilities and programmes, and in close coordination with educational institutions with field trips, children’s camps and training courses.
Al Hajeri further added:
"Al Ain Zoo is part of a larger and more ambitious vision of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to conserve arid wildlife, and as such the zoo is home to an internationally important conservation programme focusing on the wildlife of the world’s arid regions. It is also involved in conservation research, captive breeding and propagation and the reintroduction of threatened species to their wild habitats, and has partnered with numerous local and international organisations for this cause.”
New Animal Exhibits, Children’s Zoo, and Zoo Entrance
The new Mixed Asian Exhibit, one of the most popular exhibits at Al Ain Zoo, has had a face-lift, and now includes three new gazelle species including the Chital, Nilgai, and the Blackbuck.
Shaded walkways from the main entrance are now available and lead to the recently enhanced Cat House exhibit, in addition to a greater range of dining choices, from the Flamingino Café to the Mixed African café.
A fully upgraded Elezba has been transformed to the Children’s Zoo, where youngstersare encouraged to interact more with animals, including an aviary, tortoise and water pond, andchildren can also enjoy the latest activities in the new Family Zone area.
Visitors with special needs, including those with strollers, are catered for with a newly designed main gate, and finally, visitors holding VIP packages can relax in theAhlan Lounge which includesprivate shuttles and private tours.
Al Ain Zoo is located on the UAE-Oman border and is a short drive from UAE’s capital, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah and minutes away from Buraimi city in Oman. Al Ain Zoo is one of the city’s leading attractions. Visitors can also venture to the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, the former palace of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which tells the UAE’s cultural story prior to its dramatic development and JabelHafeet which rises at 1245 meters with enchanting views of the city in addition to Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain National Museum and other tourist destinations.
Al Ain Zoo is also a member of the World Association for Zoo and Aquaria (WAZA) and is actively involved in several internationally-coordinated conservation projects, working with other like-minded organisations such as Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the Species Survival Commission, San Diego Zoo, the Northern Rangelands Trust of Kenya and the Sahara Conservation Fund.
Al Ain Zoo is open from 9am to 8pm daily.
