Emirati Newspapers Voted Best In Arabic Language Use
(26 September 2013)

According to a Master’s thesis titled “Common Language Errors in the Arab Press” carried out by a researcher at the Security Media Department, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Emirati newspapers, are the best in Arabic language use compared to other newspapers. They are also reputed for respecting syntactic and morphological rules in news writing and editing.

The thesis, prepared by Awad Abbas Al Hadi from the Press Branch, aimed at identifying models of common language errors in Emirati newspapers compared with another Arab newspaper. It revealed that morphological structure errors are widespread in most Arab newspapers, along with common grammatical and spelling errors in several other newspapers, which are less prevalent in Emirati newspapers. The researcher attributed this to Emirati newspaper officials’ attention to ensure editorial excellence by hiring experienced and skilled proofreaders and editors.

Al Hadi also indicated that the low level of linguistic competence is the main cause of common language errors seen in newspapers. This negatively affects the media message’s goal, as language errors alter the meaning and cause confusion.

He noted that common language errors may be tolerated provided that they don’t affect the context or the fundamentals of classical Arabic, essential for newspapers. He also called for expanding use of the language.
In his thesis, the researcher also recommended hiring media personnel, particularly in newspapers, based on language, culture and editorial style quality, so as to achieve a purposeful media material.

It is noteworthy that the Security Media Department at Abu Dhabi Police seeks to find the best means to cater community members’ different tastes and knowledge levels, through continuous studies and research to assess its media product content. It also endeavors to learn about community members’ habits and characters to achieve efficient communication and interaction.
