Approximately 700 supervisors and school bus drivers benefited from the awareness campaigns organized by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in collaboration with Emirates Transport. The awareness campaigns aimed to educate them about traffic safety rules and the safe transportation of students during the new school year. These lectures are in line with the traffic awareness program: "Students Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility."
Major Khalid Al Fil, Acting Head of the Public Relations Department at the Directorate General of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, mentioned that the lectures reiterated the need to adhere to school bus specifications, which have been defined by the Ministry of Interior, ensure the mechanical safety of school buses, and equip them so as to transport students safely.
He also noted that school bus drivers and supervisors will be acquainted with the ‘golden rule’ for using school buses. “Namely, moving 10 steps ahead of the bus when exiting the bus and avoid bending down near the bus without the driver’s knowledge,” he explained. He also highlighted the procedures to be followed by drivers when the students exit and enter the bus, and when they approach student gathering places, school campuses, or residential neighborhoods, as well as the need to observe the traffic rules and speed limits.
Concluding, Major Al Fil urged school bus drivers and supervisors to fully comply with the student-related traffic safety instructions, pay attention to young students, ensure that they exited and moved away from the bus, and that they are not standing behind or next to the bus when it begins to move. Furthermore, he called on them to reserve one seat for each student, and ensure the validity and proper function of the buses’ A/C units. The lectures were presented by Warrant Officer Abdul Rahim Al Naqbi, from the Public Relations Department at the directorate.
