Patients in Al Ain who are suffering from chronic conditions can now avail of a faster and more convenient service to receive the regular dosage of their prescribed medication. Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine and part of the SEHA healthcare system, has launched four Prescription Refill Clinics exclusively for its patients with chronic but stable conditions.
Tawam Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the United Arab Emirates. With over 22,000 admissions in 2012 when hospital clinic visits exceeded 489,000, and an average 73 per cent occupancy rate, patients with chronic conditions usually find it a challenge to visit and wait in queues at the hospital on a regular basis. These patients can now register to be served by the Prescription Refill Clinics. They can visit the clinics or send a family member with their insurance card and medical record number. The clinic will have a complete record of their condition and prescription dosage and will be able to dispense refills in a timelier, patient-centered manner.
Prescription Refill Clinics will improve the patient experience and make it easier for them to receive medication as they will not have to vie with other patients of the hospital for doctor and pharmacist appointments. Tawam Hospital patients, especially those with chronic neurological conditions including seizures and metabolic paediatric conditions, will benefit most from these clinics.
According to Dr Samra Abouchacra, Consultant Physician at Tawam Hospital, “There are several benefits of Prescription Refill Clinics, both to the hospital as well as to patients with chronic but stable conditions. For the hospital, this service will increase efficiency of patient flow as lesser number of patients will visit the hospital. Access to the hospital will automatically become easier for new patients as more appointment slots will get freed up. For the patients, the benefits are obvious including an almost automated delivery system. We are confident that patients with chronic conditions will commend us as they begin to use the service.”
Tawam offers services in specialties including oncology, neonatal care, emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery, urology, family medicine, fertility services, neurosurgery, nephrology, paediatrics, pain management, internal medicine and obstetrics & gynaecology.
The four Prescription Refill Clinics are dedicated to sub-specialties and specific patient groups according to department guidelines and are located at Tawam Hospital premises. “Based on the uptake of this service and after taking into account the feedback from patients and from SEHA, we will look into extending this concept and providing delivery of prescription medication directly at the residences of patients with chronic but stable conditions,” added Dr Abouchacra.
Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA Health System and are owned and operated by SEHA, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
