The Department of Transport In Abu Dhabi Issues 2012 Transport Sustainability Report
(28 August 2013)

In line with its role as the entity mandated to operate, develop and regulate the transport sector in Abu Dhabi, whilst helping promote sustainability practices in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Department of Transport (DoT) unveiled its transport sustainability report for 2012, which shed light on the performance of DoT’s sectors, as well as role played by its partners to achieve sustainability objectives.

The report, “Sustainability in Motion”, is based on 6 angles: congestion relief by providing multi-modal transportation options whilst promoting infrastructure and parking management, enhancing safety and security by implementing related policies, regulations and practices, optimising services to address customers’ various needs, boosting economic value by building a world-class transportation system to promote development, and achieving excellence within the DoT to ensure the development of integrated and modern transport infrastructure. The sixth angle relates to attaining environmental sustainability by advocating clean and renewable energies whilst preserving natural resources.

The report has achieved a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Level A+ for the second consecutive year. GRI is a global non-profit organisation that strives to promote best economic, environmental and social sustainable practices and provide companies and governments worldwide with an integrated framework for sustainability reporting.
Some of the key indicators of the DoT’s 2012 sustainability report are:

- 15 million passengers by air (Approx.)
- 128,000 travellers via cruise services (Approx.)

Mohamed Hareb Al Yousuf, the Executive Director at the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi, said: “Since its inception, the DoT has prioritised sustainability as one of the key drivers and work practices, for which it has launched several initiatives and projects whilst advocating state-of-the-art technologies and world-class proven practices in all its endeavours. This drive bears witness to the DoT’s commitment to attaining Abu Dhabi Government’s strategic priorities aimed to preserve Abu Dhabi’s unique environmental, economic and social assets whist helping build brighter future for generations to come.”

“As part of its sustainability-based programmes, the DoT has set up sustainability management team to handle all related issues and coordinate with all sectors and operations to prepare periodic and integrated reports and conduct related training programmes and workshops that bring into centre stage the most innovated and worldwide adopted sustainability practices”, he added.

As a founding member of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group, the DoT continues to play an important role in achieving the Emirate of Abu Dhabi sustainability ambitions by managing this discipline and preparing reports. The DoT’s annual sustainability report is an integrated and well-structured tool that shed light on economic, environmental and social performance of the transport sector, as well as the role of the DoT’s partners to achieve sustainability objectives.
