The Capital Police Directorate apprehended 72 beggars of various nationalities in the city of Abu Dhabi, including 64 males and 8 females, between the ages of 21 to 71 years. This was achieved as a result of the concerted efforts of the police teamsand the cooperation of citizens and residents to combat this ill behavior during this auspicious month.
The Directorate indicated that the among the arrested beggars, 36 are visit visas’ holders; 30 are residents, and 3 are violators of the Residency Law; stressing that it will spare no effort to combat begging and pursue beggars so as to completely eradicate this trend.
One of the beggars had AED 22000, while another had AED 14000, both are of Arab nationality, and they managed to collect the amounts in a short period of time, by capitalizing on the sympathy of citizens and residents to earn money without effort. Moreover, a fake visa belonging to an Asian lady was seized in the possession of one of the beggars, who is in violation of the law.
Brigadier General Maktoum Al Sharifi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate described begging as an unacceptable ill behavior that the Directorate is combating resolutely, by carrying out crackdown campaigns to pursue and arrest beggars. He also highlighted the efforts of the special teams set up at all police stations to protect community members from swindlers; by urging them not to sympathize with this category of people that uses fraudulent methods and techniques to gain the sympathy of people and earn money without effort.
“Begging paves the way for crimes, as beggars roam residential areas to stake out the houses with a view to rob them, and to determine the preventive measures taken by the residents. Many robberies have been carried out by beggars who had received alms from the targeted house”, explained by Brigadier General Al Sharifi. He also urged citizens and residents and not to allow beggars into their homes and to refrain from sympathizing with them, regardless of their methods.
On the same note, he indicated that setting up special teams at the level of the Directorate coupled with cooperation from community members to address this phenomenon, enhance the continuous efforts exerted by the Abu Dhabi Police to prevent begging. “Citizens and residents alike now understand the real truth behind beggars, thanks to the awareness-raising campaigns carried out by Abu Dhabi Police and to the diligent efforts exerted by the Police institution to combat this trend; and other negative phenomena”, added Al Sharifi.
He urged people not to hesitate to report beggars by calling the operations room on (999) or any police station, during Ramadan and normal days; around the clock, so as to contribute to combat begging, and prevent beggars from making money by capitalizing on the people’s sympathy.
For his part, Colonel Rashid Al Dhaheri, Director of Al Shabia Police Station at Abu Dhabi Police indicated that raising citizens and residents’ awareness on the risks of begging has motivated them to take part in the efforts exerted to combat this phenomenon, by reporting beggars to the operations room, and understanding the fraudulent methods used by beggars to earn money during the holy month.
Commenting on the same subject, Lieutenant Colonel Muslim Al Ameri, Head of the Khalidiya Police Station indicated that the police managed to apprehend a beggar of Arab nationality, in possession of a fake visa belonging to an Asian woman. The beggar confessed to having forged documents and visas to his fellow countrymen. Concluding, Lt Colonel Al Ameri, stressed that pursuing and arresting these individuals in cooperation with citizens and residents is instrumental to address this trend.
