Taxi Drivers Receive Iftar Fare Courtesy Of The St. Regis Abu Dhabi
(24 July 2013)
Holy Month Initiative from Soon-to-be-Opened Luxury Address Honours the Work of the Capital’s Unsung Heroes

The hard work and dedication of the UAE capital’s taxi drivers is being honoured with a Ramadan initiative by the emirate’s soon-to-be-opened five-star establishment, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi.

The luxury Corniche address, which is receiving its first guests on August 15th, is celebrating the work of the city’s unsung heroes by providing them with free Iftar meals to break their fast during the Holy Month.

“’Iftar for Cabs’ is our way of acknowledging the essential role that taxi drivers play within our community and we want to reach out and say thank you to them for their commitment to their work,” said Oliver Key, General Manager of The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. “They are an integral part of the fabric of Abu Dhabi and their dedication each and every day means that business and tourism in the capital are able to run smoothly and efficiently,” he added.

The Iftar for Cabs charitable activity was first introduced by the Starwood Hotels & Resorts group - of which The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is a part - in 2010 and has proved a great hit with the capital’s taxi drivers each year since.

The special Iftar packs being given out are prepared by contributors from across The St. Regis Abu Dhabi’s departments, including butlers from its bespoke St. Regis Butler Service, therapists from the luxury Remede Spa and food and beverage teams from its gourmet eateries, Rhodes 44 and Villa Toscana. The volunteers all helped with some aspect of bringing the Iftar for Cabs initiative to life, with the finished food parcels being distributed at the hotel’s main entrance.

With the average taxi in the UAE clocking up around 500 km a day, the sustenance provided with the food and beverage packages has proved a welcome relief for hungry drivers at sunset. The cabbies, who are busy ferrying passengers home to break their own fasts, often don’t get the chance to celebrate their own Iftar, so the food and drink supplied by The St. Regis Abu Dhabi’s initiative means that at least they have been able to pull into the hotel’s main entrance for a replenishing pit-stop before continuing with their duties.

“We are extremely glad to be able to help the capital’s cab drivers in this small way,” remarked Key. “This initiative represents the spirit of the Holy Month of Ramadan and we are extremely proud of everyone who participated to make this fourth edition of Iftar for Cabs such a big success,” he added.
