Al Jalila Foundation Donates Aed 300,000 To Tawam Hospital To Cover The Treatment Costs For Patients With Cancer And Genetic Disorders
(17 July 2013)

Al Jalila Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that is championing healthcare improvements by investing in medical treatment, education and research, has donated AED300,000 to Tawam Hospital to cover the costs of the much-needed treatment for patients with various forms of cancer and genetic disorders. Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine and part of the SEHA healthcare system, is one of the region’s leading centres for oncology and genetic disorder research and treatment.

The donation from Al Jalila Foundation is a welcomed boost that gives critically ill patients greater access to the best medication, blood tests, X-Rays, medical equipment, and chemotherapy.

Mr. Gregory F. Schaffer, Chief Executive Officer, Tawam Hospital, said: “We are honoured to have received this donation from Al Jalila Foundation – an incredible organisation established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Foundation has aims which are closely aligned with our own – to make lasting and significant contributions in healthcare to transform lives. This donation will no doubt transform the lives of many patients and their families, and will allow our clinical teams to advance their clinical practice in the treatment of cancer and genetic diseases, enabling us to enhance the quality of lives of our patients.”

Mr. Schaffer added: “We are incredibly grateful to Al Jalila Foundation and to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed for their generosity, and will do all we can to provide the best possible treatment and care for those who will benefit from their donation.”

Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, commented: “Debilitating illnesses such as cancer and genetic disorders affect not only the patients themselves, but their caregivers and families who often have to put their own lives on hold. With medical treatment being one of our three pillars - alongside medical education and research - we hope to facilitate medical interventions for hundreds of critically ill patients of all nationalities. Tawam Hospital is an ideal partner in this endeavor, courtesy of its reputation for world-class standards in oncology and genetic disorders. We believe that when patients are freed from the emotional burden of worrying about funding their treatment, they are in a better mental state to focus on their recovery.”

Al Jalila Foundation was officially launched as a not-for-profit organisation by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum on 1 April 2013. The Foundation is a local initiative with global aspirations that aims to make lasting and significant contributions in healthcare to transform lives. Its mandate is to promote medical treatment, education and research by investing in the UAE’s medical treatment capabilities; providing scholarships to nurture a homegrown generation of medical professionals; and awarding grants for groundbreaking research that addresses health challenges prevalent in the region. In line with its vision to be a global healthcare foundation, Al Jalila Foundation collaborates with other philanthropic organisations locally and internationally to achieve regional and global benefits.

Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA Health System and are owned and operated by SEHA, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
