(14 July 2013)

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police launched an introductory campaign to acquaint community members with its Program to reduce traffic accidents, titled "Together" on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to raise the standard of traffic culture.

The campaign embodies the efforts exerted by Traffic and Patrols Directorate to achieve a sustainable traffic safety, as per the strategic priority of Abu Dhabi Police GHQ to make roads safer, and the Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s strategy and purposeful procedures aimed at reducing all reasons that lead to traffic accidents. It also includes distribution of stickers bearing the campaign’s slogan “Together”, and training programs for the directorate’s staff members.

According to Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, the introductory campaign aims to acquaint all segments of society with the Traffic and Patrols’ “Together” program to reduce traffic accidents, and its four creative community-based initiatives launched by the Directorate this year, to reinforce the exerted efforts.

He added: “These initiatives include ‘the Best School Abiding with Traffic Rules’ that aims to promote safety standards and traffic awareness among students; ‘the Best Labor Camp Abiding with Traffic Rules’, which aims to raise the level of traffic culture among workers; the ‘Best Family Abiding with Traffic Rules” initiative for all family members; and the ‘best young driver’ initiative, which targets drivers between the ages of 18 to 25 years. The selection criteria are mainly based on the need of having no record whatsoever of violations or traffic accidents during that period”.

Al Harthi indicated that the Traffic and Patrols Program to reduce traffic accidents, "together" on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter is increasingly attracting social networks’ users.

In this context, he explained that the total posts, comments and views on Facebook amounted to 8.293. 432, while the number of followers of the program totaled 30 thousand followers. Furthermore, he noted that the number of awareness messages via Twitter amounted to 6220; awareness messages via "YouTube" reached 1.100.000 users. 57 thousand viewers watched a 6-minute video clip on YouTube, which proves the success of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate awareness program.

Al Harthi continued: “A total 42.820.000 individuals “liked” the four community-based initiatives recently launched by the directorate (best driver, best school, best family, and best labor camp traffic-wise). This promotes the efforts to improve the motorists’ behavior and achieve communication and dialogue with them, with a view to promote traffic awareness and achieve a sustainable traffic culture”.

According to Al Harthi, these figures reflect the momentum gained by these initiatives among the Abu Dhabi community members, pointing out that these numbers are expected to increase with time. He noted that such actions reflect the directorate’s keenness to develop services and awareness programs provided to the public, by leveraging the latest technological innovations and aspiring to adopt all available options to ensure excellence, as per the instructions of the wise leadership.

On the same note, Al Harthi underscored the attention dedicated by the directorate to improve the process of communication with the various categories of drivers, to review their feedback, their visions and their demands; as well as tackle various topics related to issues of security and safety, and receive the drivers’ opinions and proposals. He indicated that this measure contributed significantly to instill traffic rules among drivers, “Traffic safety is a societal responsibility that requires concerted efforts from all members of society, and is a necessary behavioral model,” he added.

Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police stated that the directorate aims to encourage significant numbers of people to participate actively with the Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s “Together” program to reduce traffic accidents, as per its future vision. For this end, it has organized a training course for its staff members, on the professional methods to deal with social networking sites; so as to support its development vision.

Moreover, Al Harthi indicated that the program included a number of important topics, notably the increasing influence of social networking sites on communities, and how they can be used in police work, to implement the plans and projects, aimed at achieving communication with the various segments of society.

The program also included a detailed overview on the optimal use of this platform, to review the traffic-related proposals and opinions submitted by the public. This would enable the directorate to evaluate its operational performance, identify gaps and weaknesses, resolve them and launch new initiatives.

Concluding, Al Harthi emphasized that the Directorate is endeavoring to intensify awareness through social networking sites, due to their significant role in reaching the largest possible number of people, without neglecting the traditional means to increase traffic awareness. “This highlights our leadership’s vision aimed at maintaining the human wealth, and harnessing modern methods and techniques, so as to achieve a safe society, and a sustainable traffic safety,” he noted.
