Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) has opened enrolment for this year’s edition of its annual Tourism Youth Summer Camp, which aims to introduce the emirate’s tourism destination product to Emiratis aged between 15-17 years.
“This year the programme takes in many new aspects of the destination reflecting the evolvement of Abu Dhabi’s tourism proposition,” explained Nasser Al Reyami, Tourism Standards Director, TCA Abu Dhabi.
“We encourage nationals – both boys and girls – to sign up for the three-week programme to get a better understanding of the industry, its role and goals and its impact on the local society.”
To be held at the four-star Yas Rotana Hotel on Abu Dhabi’s entertainment destination of Yas Island, the camp will run from August 18-September 5 and will comprise 100 young Emiratis - a mix of both boys and girls. The camp is being organised by TCA Abu Dhabi in co-ordination with the European International College in the UAE capital.
Camp modules this year will include the inclusive destination marketing campaign currently being run for Yas Island and the recently-launched Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau.
There will be field trip visits to facilities on Saadiyat Island including the five-star The St.Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and the Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition centre as well as to Masdar City.
“We’ll introduce them to sports tourism as well with visits to the Yas Marina Circuit and Yas Links golf course while they will be given an overview of events and attractions in the emirate and the role they play in attracting visitors,” added Al Reyami.
“A special workshop will be dedicated to the preservation and promotion of culture and heritage as this is one of the destination’s USPs and a core role of TCA Abu Dhabi. They will also get to meet Chef Khulood Atiq the UAE’s own celebrity chef and learn the role cuisine can play in promoting the destination and its culture.”
In another workshop, the students will get to meet airline and tour operator representatives for the inside story on their role in the tourism food chain. This will be complemented by a visit to Etihad Airways’ headquarters.
“And the whole programme will round out by a workshop on entrepreneurship in the travel and hospitality segments as we may have some budding entreprenuers among them,” added Al Reyami. “They will learn of the initiatives of the Khalifa Fund in nurturing and assisting entrepreneurial programmes.”
The Tourism Youth Summer Camp 2013 will culminate in a graduation ceremony for the students.
