HCT Students On Track For Shell Eco-Marathon Race; Discuss Progress On Fuel-Efficient "Made In The UAE" Cars With Shell Technical Teams And UAE Business Leaders
(14 May 2013)

Shell hosted engineering students from the Higher Colleges of Technology, Abu Dhabi Men’s College and Al Ruwais Colleges, to discuss progress on the fuel-efficient cars they are developing to compete in the prestigious Shell Eco-Marathon race, taking place in Kuala Lumpur this July.

Senior Shell technical experts and leaders were present at the event to offer students advice and technical support as they put the final touches on their “made in the UAE” cars. Distinguished members of the UAE business community were also present to hear about this innovative initiative.

Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice-Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology said, “Shell’s Eco-marathon campaign provides our students with the opportunity to build a fuel-efficient car right here in the UAE, which will be essential to helping us meet our future energy needs, while also giving them the practical, applied skills and knowledge that are embedded in all of HCT’s programs. We wish our students the best of luck on the track in July and hope that they will benefit from the ongoing support to see their dream come true.”

Commenting on this global initiative, Dr. John Barry, Shell Abu Dhabi Country Chair said, “We are very enthusiastic about the growing UAE participation this year in the Shell Eco-Marathon race, a global competition for innovation, and developing solutions to society’s most pressing dilemma – the energy challenge.”

Seven teams from five universities will be competing from the UAE, including students from HCT Abu Dhabi Men’s College, HCT Al Ruwais Colleges and HCT Dubai Men’s College, as well as AUD and AUS. Students from the Petroleum Institute, Khalifa University and UAE University were also in attendance and gained valuable knowledge about Shell’s Eco-marathon campaign and the opportunity to join the 2014 campaign.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), road transport alone accounts for approximately 17% of global energy use. In rapidly growing countries across the Middle East, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing year on year and finding ‘smarter mobility’ solutions today, such as the fuel-efficient cars, is more pressing than ever.
