Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed National Security Advisor and Vice Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the first edition of the Abu Dhabi Statistics Conference 2013 opens today bringing together 550 participants and 18 speakers. The first-of-its-kind event held 12-13 May in Abu Dhabi, is organized by the Statistics Centre-Abu Dhabi with the objective of increasing awareness of the importance of administrative data records produced by governments, semi-government, and private corporations.
Addressing the local and international statistics experts and government officials in his opening speech, H.E Nasser Ahmad Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SCAD highlighted the importance of understanding the need to produce high quality statistics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
“The conference aims to showcase and enhance various statistical aspects including the concept of e-statistics, the ideal mechanism to support the collaboration process between corporations as well as statistical data users. E-statistics is also important in improving the quality of statistics, making them more accurate, updated and unifying their standards”, said H.E. Al Suwaidi.
Delivering a key-note to the audience gathered at the conference, H.E. Butti Ahmed Mohamed Bin Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi, said, “I would like to extend my appreciation to HH Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, National Security Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Executive Council for his conference sponsorship. I would also like to announce the three initiatives adopted by SCAD: ‘Personal Inflation Calculator’, Purchasing Power Calculator’ and ‘Abu Dhabi Population Clock’. The three initiatives will provide updated data available on the website.”
The opening day of the event themed under “Contributing in Development- Enhancing Quality of Administrative Data”, saw expert statisticians from the UAE, region and world-over discuss the importance of high quality statistics to support decision-making processes and economic development.
Bringing the Slovenian experience to the conference on day one, Irena Križman, Director-General of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, discussed the importance of improving the quality of administrative data. During her presentation, she highlighted the standards of quality reporting (European Statistical System) followed by the Republic of Slovenia. She shed light on the kinds of reports developed by Statistics Slovenia to inform users about the quality of statistics data, and outlined the challenges faced by Statistics Slovenia: automated calculation, better online integration and dissemination of data.
Also speaking on the first day, Manuela Lenk, Statistician at Statistics Austria discussed the Register-based census in Austria. She discussed the evolution of the Austrian census, the principle of redundancy and methods of data privacy protection. She went on to explain the processing of raw data into final data pool and an establishment of a quality framework for register-based statistics.
As part of the second plenary session on day one, speakers discussed the role of international organisations in administrative date. He highlighted the importance of standard-setting, identification of best practice and data-linking and OECD’s role in motivating the development of new internationally comparable statistics based on administrative data. He cited developing new indicators, encouraging linking, microdata access and capitalising on private sources as methods to get the most out of administrative data.
The conference is a result of SCAD’s initiative to mark the “Year of Statistics”, an international awareness campaign involving 1,850 statistics authorities from 122 countries. During the conference, SCAD will announce three statistical initiatives that will benefit local decision makers, policy makers, researchers, media as well as several segments of Abu Dhabi.
The event brings together 18 speakers from 13 countries, representing the most important national statistics centers in the world.
