Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) celebrated International Nursing Day across its entire health system, honoring their nursing staff for their invaluable role in healthcare delivery in Abu Dhabi.

All SEHA hospitals and clinics including Tawam Hospital, Al Ain Hospital, Al Rahba Hospital, Mafraq Hospital, Corniche Hospital, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and the SKMC Outpatient Services Department, Al Gharbia Hospitals, Ambulatory Healthcare Services and its 60 clinics and Mafraq Dialysis Center participated in the celebration to honor SEHA’s nearly 6,700 nurses for their continued efforts to serve the patients and community and help SEHA achieve its vision of world-class healthcare for its communities served.

Cathleen Ann Wheatley, Director, Group Nursing and Patient Care Services for SEHA said that the company’s quality of care are dependent on qualified SEHA nursing staff helping patients heal and ensure patient safety.
”International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth”, said Wheatley. The International Council of Nurses commemorates this important day each year with recognition of the role of nurses in the healing sciences and with community education on the importance of the role of nurses in the delivery of safe patient care services.”

Tawam Hospital, one of the SEHA flagship institutions, celebrated with many events and activities to mark the occasion and honor the nursing staff working in in the hospital and its related clinics. Management distributed gifts, Hili Fun City entrance tickets and coupons for the Al Ain Mall. There were also in-house competitions with token cash and in-kind prizes for the winners.

Al-Ain Hospital, Tawam’s sister hospital in Al Ain, honored its nurses by hosting lunch and dinner events for all nurses working at the hospital as well as other activities recognizing its nursing staff.

Al Rahba Hospital held a celebration breakfast for all nurses working at the hospital while at Mafraq Hospital, management organized a seminar for its nursing staff in collaboration with Fatima College of Health Sciences. The annual seminar is academically approved and will be added to the academic credits of all staff attending. It focused on the safe practices, patient communication and best practices in nursing care.

Corniche Hospital organized its events around the babies in the hospital. All babies born on International Nursing Day received a gift from the nurses who helped bring them into the world. There were also tributes to the many long terms staff that helped make Corniche Hospital the premier maternity care hospital in the Middle East. Sheikh Khalifa Medical City along with its extensive Outpatient Services Department joined in with the Emirates Nursing Association at the Fairmont Hotel to raise awareness of the importance of the nursing profession and its role in providing health care to patients. SKMC senior managers toured the nursing units at Sheikh Khalifa Medical Center, offering certificates and gifts to the nurses at their work areas along with complimentary activities and events on the hospital campus including a gala evening dinner.

Similar recognition events took place at Mafraq Dialysis Center, Ambulatory Healthcare Services and its many clinics across the Emirate and in SEHA’s six Gharbia Hospitals and supporting clinics.

“Nursing is one of the most needed and important roles in healthcare,” added Cathleen Ann Wheatley. “This is a profession that offers long term job security as well as both tangible and intangible rewards. One of our long term strategic goals is to attract more Emiratis to join the nursing profession and help build the security of the nation by reducing the UAE’s dependence on foreign labor in the healthcare field. We are collaborating with local universities on nursing education, training programs and offering volunteer opportunities for those who wish to experience a healthcare environment and the challenges and rewards it brings.”

Wheatley concluded that SEHA was proud of its nursing staff and highly appreciates and values their distinguished accomplishments. ”Our nursing team is one of the primary pillars supporting SEHA’s mission which is to continuously improve patient care. Nurses do not merely provide health care and services to patients, but also play a leading role in developing the health services in UAE”
