Help make a difference in the lives of women who reside in the labour camps by shopping for unique and one-off craft and artesian items at Jacqueline Wood’s Arts and Crafts Bazaar. On May 17, at the Cristal Hotel in Abu Dhabi, artisans will display wares that they have handcrafted here in the UAE. With 24 exhibitors already having reserved a space, attendees can shop for wide range of handmade items including sandals, children’s clothing, hats, silk flower arrangements, chocolates, paintings, photography, and natural stone and crystal jewellery. The bazaar is open from 1pm until 7pm.
Bazaar organizer and Abu Dhabi Women’s Group Founder, Jacqueline Wood, will use the proceeds, including the AED 10 per person entrance fee, to purchase art and craft supplies for Labor of Love’s ‘Camp Creative’ initiative, providing labourers with an opportunity to develop their creative skills. Supporting this effort and attending the Bazaar is Feel Great Helping, a network that of friends who enjoy “doing good together.”
Camp Creative is a volunteer initiative started earlier this year by Labour of Love, an organization that aims to improve the lives of laborers in Abu Dhabi. Art workshops provided so far have included watercolour, collage and paper mâché jewellery making for women labourers.
“Women love to be able to sit and create, letting their imaginations run riot producing something beautiful for themselves or for their home or friends,” said Jacqueline. “How many of us remember painting on the kitchen table as small children and being able to continue that through to adulthood? This is something not available currently to these ladies.”
Leading the Camp Creative initiative is Michal Teague, a public artist and teacher. She is running a series of 2 hour workshops with women labourers. She would also like to make it possible for them to continue to create in their own time by giving each woman a basic starter kit of a sketch pad, pencils and watercolours.
“These workers send most of their money home each month to support their families and don’t have much to spare for themselves, “ said Michal. “The women are so appreciative of the opportunity to relax by learning new skills and connecting with people in the wider community. And who knows? Perhaps this activity inspires the women laborers to continue exploring the possibilities of what they learn one day using it to become a micro entrepreneur.”
Admission fee for the Bazaar is AED 10 per person. For questions regarding the Arts & Crafts Bazaar please contact Jacqueline Wood at Info@abudhabiwomensgroup.com
