Delivering Quality In The Nuclear Energy Industry
(28 April 2013)
ENEC CEO speaks at Abu Dhabi Quality Forum

The importance of quality and its role in the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program was discussed today by Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).

Speaking as a keynote panellist at the Abu Dhabi Quality Forum, Mr. Al Hammadi said quality in the nuclear energy industry meant safety, security and efficiency. Mr. Al Hammadi joined the opening Plenary Panel Session where he outlined his priorities for developing world-class quality standards for ENEC.

Other panellists were HE Anas Jawdat Al Barguthi, Executive Director of Markets and Consumers Services Sector of Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), UAE; Khaled Salmeen Al Kuwari, Chief Executive Officer, Khalifa Fund Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), UAE; Lord Jamie Lindsay, Chairman, United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), UK. Panellists discussed the question: How will innovative quality standards contribute to transform the economy of Abu Dhabi into one of the most competitive in the world?

“Quality is essential to growth and sustainability,” said Mr. Al Hammadi. “Quality also promotes business excellence, good corporate governance and transparency.

“We are committed to the highest standards of safety, security and complete operational transparency, and quality is inextricably linked to these commitments. We have made a rigorous Quality Assurance program a priority from the very beginning.”

ENEC’s extensive Quality Assurance program was developed to ensure that the UAE’s first nuclear power plants are designed, constructed, commissioned and operated in line with the best industry practices, governing codes and standards, regulations and license requirements. The aim of the Quality program is to ensure that ENEC’s overriding priority - the safety of the UAE community, its employees, the environment and the future plants - is achieved every day.

ENEC’s QA program is applied to all aspects of the organization’s activities. The company conducts regular training sessions, assessments and audits to ensure high standards are being met and continually improved upon. ENEC’s QA program and standards are also diligently applied to every contractor and sub-contractor involved in the program – the entire supply chain.

“By extending our QA program to all of our activities and contractors, we aim to achieve the highest standards in safety, quality, availability and reliability. Like our philosophy on safety, we believe that everyone is responsible for Quality, and it is this approach that will drive continual improvement in everything we do.”
Mr. Al Hammadi added that through its commitment to quality, ENEC has also contributed to the development of the local economy and helped to facilitate the growth of the industry in Abu Dhabi. ENEC has been working with local companies to upgrade their systems to become ASME Nuclear Component certified companies, a key certification to become nuclear-approved providers to the UAE peaceful nuclear energy program.

“The UAE Government chose to pursue nuclear energy not only because it promises a safe, clean, reliable and efficient source of electricity, but also because if offers the growth and opportunity that a new, high-technology industry provides. In just a few years, we are already seeing a burgeoning nuclear industry supply chain here in the UAE.”

ENEC has awarded more than US $1 billion in contracts to more than 180 UAE companies since its establishment. The contracts have been awarded through joint collaboration between ENEC and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) over the past three years, as part of its effort to support and develop local industry. The contracts cover a range of products and services including marine dredging, the provisioning of steel, metals and cables, housing projects and site construction activities.
