The registration process for the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) Annual Environment Competition has garnered another tremendous response ahead of this month’s judging activities.
Since the competition’s registration closed last month, a total of 1720 entries from 448 schools and 20 universities in the UAE have been received by EAD for the 12th edition of its Annual Environment Competition.
Developed by EAD in 2000-2001 in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), the Annual Environment Competition educates students and engages them by providing them with a forum to express themselves when it comes to the key environmental challenges faced by the UAE. In September 2012, EAD opened the Annual Environment Competition to all schools and universities in the UAE.
The competition builds student capacities in debate, research, and campaign development, with the theme this year ?Green Economy: Does it include you?’ relevant to the key outcome from June 2012’s Rio+20 Summit.
Fozeya Ibrahim Al Mahmoud Director, Environmental Outreach Division, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management Sector, EAD said: "The competition is designed specifically to motivate students to learn more about environmental issues, in turn giving them confidence to voice their concerns on the future of our emirate and the world. We’ve seen an increase of 14 per cent in the number of individual entries from last year and the passion we’ve seen shows us that environmental issues are already at the forefront of the future generations’ minds." To participate, school students are asked to submit their entries for various categories such as:, Drawing ’&’ Painting, Short Story Writing, Essay Writing, Group Awareness Campaigns, Debate , and Group Research Reports.
University students this year were asked to submit entries in categories that include Designing a public service announcement, and Writing newspaper articles.
Since the Annual Environment Competition was first launched in 2000-2001, the level of participation has increased exponentially. In 2000, 47 schools participated with 247 individual entries. The number of schools and universities participating has increased by 89 per cent to 468 and the number of individual entries this year has risen by 85 per cent to 1720.
The launch of this year’s competition attracted a wide audience from numerous education institutions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. A total of 249 representatives from 227 institutions attended the launch in Abu Dhabi, while 193 representatives from 147 different institutions attended the event in Dubai.
And with the final stage of the competition focusing on debate and research, EAD has trained 158 students from 47 different Abu Dhabi schools with another 91 students prepped from 38 Dubai schools. The training gives the students the best background and skills possible to help them shape dialogue regarding the environment at the judging period taking place later this month.
