A special graduation ceremony to honor two trainees of the Fetal Medicine Advanced Training Skills Module (ATSM) program at Corniche Hospital was held at Abu Dhabi’s St Regis Hotel, Saadiyat Island.
Dr. Aqeela Mustafa and Dr. Fareeda Jahangir, specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology at Corniche Hospital, have successfully completed the hospital’s training program, which included a rigorous 4-week rotation in the United Kingdom. In 2010, Corniche was the first facility outside of the UK to be accredited by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and authorized to provide advanced training in maternal medicine. The current trainee in post is Dr Rasha Al Zaabi, the first UAE national to have graduated from Corniche Hospital’s ATSM training in Maternal /Obstetric medicine last year.
“In a country where the rate of genetic disorders is high and physicians who are subspecialized in the field of fetal medicine are in high demand, this internationally-recognized training at a local level is crucial," said Dr. Mariam Al Mazrouei, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Corniche Hospital. "The Fetal Medicine ATSM is a vital component in our quest to elevate the standards of maternal and newborn health care services in the UAE and the region. We are very proud to know that our graduates are contributing to that process.”
Royal College recognition allows Corniche Hospital to offer the ATSM in Fetal Medicine to the medical community in the UAE as part of a postgraduate training program in obstetrics and gynecology. These modules have been designed to provide trainees with the increasingly advanced subspecialty skills required for independent practice. Physicians undertaking postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology in the UK, for instance, must complete a minimum of two ATSMs in order to obtain a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in obstetrics and gynecology.
Corniche Hospital’s commitment to continuous medical education for local health care providers has earned the hospital recognition from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International LLC (ACGME-I). The UAE, represented by SEHA, is only the second country outside of the United States to have its hospitals and residency programmes accredited by this body.
The 299-bed Corniche Hospital, the largest maternity and neonatal healthcare facility in the UAE, is managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International and is part of the SEHA Health System owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA).
