HE Lubna Al Qassimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development, received Filipo Grandi, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), lately in the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
HE Lubna Al Qassimi discussed with Mr. Grandi the possible ways and mechanisms of cooperation between the UAE and the UNRWA in providing assistance to Palestinian refugees, and highlighted the refugees’ needs. HE Lubna confirmed that the UAE and its donor organizations work together on alleviating the suffering from Palestinian refugees by providing funding to various projects administered by UNRWA.
HE highlighted that the UAE has provided AED 122 million to UNRWA between 2010 to 2012, as humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian refugees in the countries the agency operates in the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.
Mr. Grandi congratulated HE Lubna on the establishment of the new Ministry considering it a huge and a leading step in the region, and stressed on the vital role the UAE is doing to provide help to refugees in general, and the Palestinian refugees in specific, as well as the UAE’s quick response to provide assistance to those in need in humanitarian emergencies.
Mr. Grandi has introduced HE Lubna with the programs and activities conducted by UNRWA to provide support to 5 million registered refugees, that includes educational and health projects, relief and social services, microfinance, infrastructure and camp development, and emergency programs. He indicated that UNRWA aims to employ 30,000 people mostly refugees with funds provided by donors, and highlighted the fact that UNRWA is administering 900 facilities including schools, hospitals, and clinics, besides providing aid to 530,000 Palestinian refugees residing in Syria.
