Opera star Bryn Terfel shared the stage with the next generation of choral greats last night. The man known as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Wagner performed with the choirs of Brighton College Abu Dhabi and the Emirati a capella quartet SAMA for an inspirational evening of song that was received with thunderous applause from an enthralled Abu Dhabi audience.
The night of song was conducted by musical director Tim Rhys Evans, founder of the Welsh choirs Only Men Aloud! and Only Boys Aloud!, who has been instrumental in reviving the male choir tradition. Only Men Aloud! performed during the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, and has released three chart-topping albums with Universal as part of a five-record deal.
The previous night, Terfel performed with a different caliber of musicians: the Czech Philharmonic, one of the world’s top orchestras, and Mariinsky Opera lead soprano Victoria Yastrebova.
"Bryn Terfel devoted his considerable energies and signature flourish equally to both performances is testament to the spirit of the Abu Dhabi Festival," said Her Excellency Mrs Hoda I. Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival. She continued, "One of our core beliefs is that the arts form a universal language from which we can all learn. Bryn Terfel’s appearance onstage tonight drove home this message. Music is a joyful, unifying experience that creates magical connections between people, whoever they are and wherever they may come from. We hope that our singers will cherish the memory of this evening and inspire others to explore their creative potential through song."
The 10th edition of the Abu Dhabi Festival will draw to a close on March 31. Information on community events and exhibitions during the Festival’s remaining few days can be found on the Festival website on www.abudhabifestival.ae.
