Patients and staff at Imperial College London Diabetes Centre were treated to a recital by musicians from the world-renowned Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, who performed as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival’s third consecutive ‘Music in Hospitals’ initiative. The classical sounds of strings echoed through the halls as the ensemble of musicians gave an impassioned performance.
Part of ADMAF’s year-round Arts and Health Programme, ‘Music in Hospitals’ is based on the overwhelming scientific evidence of the positive physical and psychological impact of music on patients. Music has been shown to reduce the stress of hospital visits and aid patient recovery by helping to reduce levels of tension and pain.
Carol Sansour Dabdoub, Marketing and Communications Manager, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, said the Czech Philharmonic’s visit gave a boost to patients and staff alike. “The response among patients and staff was overwhelmingly positive. The musical interaction was beautiful and proved most beneficial for everyone. We would like to thank the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation and the Abu Dhabi Festival for enabling us to participate in this pioneering initiative.”
The Abu Dhabi Festival Community Programme stems from the Abu Dhabi Festival’s mandate to uphold and preserve the legacy of ‘Bilad Al Khayr’ (Land of Blessings), a celebration of the UAE as a land of respect and enlightenment. The Community Programme enables people from across the spectrum of UAE society to access arts and culture. Other initiatives include workshops for underprivileged children and a series of poetry workshops for the elderly across the UAE.
