Hundreds of school children across Abu Dhabi and the UAE are being introduced to the sport of Jiu-Jitsu as excitement builds ahead of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2013 & World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup. The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2013 & World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup are held under the Patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
As part of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s continued commitment to grow the sport domestically, this year’s schools initiative is being led by the new official mascot of the tournament, a falcon named Azzam.
As the 2013 community demonstrations campaign began, the community saw Azzam and a number of Jiu-Jitsu coaches meet school children in Abu Dhabi for a number of interactive sessions. The roadshow will make its way across the UAE offering fun coaching, training advice and health and fitness information. This is part of an action packed schedule to encourage more young people to take up the sport as part of an active and healthy lifestyle.
The roadshow will run over a two-week period and also will include visits to public locations across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, in preparation for the 2013 Championship, which once again brings the world’s best fighters to the UAE capital from 10th-13th April at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).
Abdulmunam Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation said; “As part of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s commitment to grass roots development in the sport we are pleased to unveil Azzam the Falcon. Alongside our existing schools and community Jiu-Jitsu initiatives, we are sure Azzam will attract a new generation of young children into this healthy and active sport.”
Commenting on the increased interest in Jiu-Jitsu Abdulmunam Al Hashemi continued: “Interest in Jiu-Jitsu is growing year on year, especially within schools, and it’s great to see the kids enjoying healthy competition and learning new skills. It is a disciplined sport that teaches respect, mental strength and a personal well being, and we hope this new initiative inspires many more children to take up the sport.”
Amongst the schools scheduled to receive visits are Al Ajban School, Abu Dhabi, Sultan Bin Zayed School, Al Ain and Al Nokhba School, Western region. All will welcome Azzam the Falcon and with additional roadshows planned for malls and other public locations, the wider community will also have their chance to get involved in Jiu-Jitsu.
