Staged at Abu Dhabi Corniche today, the annual Terry Fox Run has raised AED 337,533 from individuals and companies for cancer research. Terrance Stanley ’Terry’ Fox, was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Judith Fox-Alder, Terry Fox’s sister and Director of Terry Fox International Fund, and Canadian Ambassador to UAE Arif Lalani, led 18,000 runners and walkers in the 18th edition, organised by the Terry Fox Foundation.
Sheikh Nahyan commended the remarkable charitable initiatives by the Fund for supporting cancer research initiatives across the world.
’’The UAE backs the humanitarian initiative, which was launched by Terry Fox, and has become today an annual event of charity calendar in more than 30 countries. The UAE has a bright record of such humanitarian, charitable and therapeutic initiatives,’’ Sheikh Nahyan added.
Since its inception in Abu Dhabi in 1995, the event collected AED 15 million which funded 42 cancer research projects in collaboration with the UAE University.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.
