Department of Municipal Affairs and Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters discuss immediate measures to protect public properties
(15 August 2008)

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters discussed ways to boost the effectiveness on the roads and pavements.

They also discussed applying stronger deterrents and ways to develop coordination to confront the misuse of roads by some ‘heavy goods vehicles’ and construction companies.

This move comes in an effort to stop the negative effects resulting from negligence, which represents risks to the lives of residents, causes damages to roads, obstruction to traffic flow, distorting the city’s general appearance. An additional outcome from this problem leads to municipal monetary waste due to the required additional maintenance and cleaning of roads and pavements. This meeting was held in response to noting some vehicles and machinery on the city’s streets dropping concrete, sand and debris as they move around the city.

During the meeting, the list of current offence regulations applied by the municipalities were reviewed, along with the list of current contraventions applied by the police that are stated in the traffic laws.

His Excellency Ahmad Shareef, Undersecretary, Department of Municipal Affairs said, "the Capital of Abu Dhabi Emirate is a leader in building and urban development, adopting the most refined criteria in the world to secure comfort and protection to its residents. The Department of Municipal Affairs calls on companies, consulting firms supervising projects in the Emirate and all those who use the roads to take the responsibility and contribute to the city’s standards by respecting public regulations."

His Excellency expressed his desire for municipalities to meet with companies and consultants in the construction industry and government projects in order to encourage them to take responsibility with respect to these issues and adhering to the regulations and traffic laws. At the end of the meeting, a review was agreed on offences and penalties to ensure their effectiveness in deterring offenders and achieving the desired results in dealing with these issues.

Coordination between municipal monitoring and patrols was agreed to issue offences and penalties by any of the two parties in order to link these offences against municipal and traffic laws with the black points system supervised by Police General Headquarters.
