Inaugural Summer In Abu Dhabi Family Festival Honours United Arab Emirates History
(13 August 2008)
Heritage & Culture Island Reveals United Arab Emirates Rich Traditions

The UAE’s rich and colorful history is honoured by the ‘Heritage and Culture Island,’ part of the new ‘Summer in Abu Dhabi’ family festival being held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) until August 18, 2008.

Sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), the island is one of seven uniquely-themed zones housed in 13,000 square metres of air conditioned indoor space. ‘Heritage and Culture Island’ provides the opportunity to learn, enjoy and experience the UAE’s culture in a creative, fun, and educational environment. Highlights of the culturally-themed area include folkloric dances, traditional food and music, the telling of old stories, ornaments and handicrafts, calligraphy, an entertainment studio, and two animatronic camels.

“Summer in Abu Dhabi is as much a reflection on the importance of the UAE’s past as it is a celebration of the present and the future. With the help of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, we are featuring the artistic, social, and cultural roots of the country and its regions, with emphasis of course on the growth of our host city, Abu Dhabi. We want to relive the simple and humble beginnings of this great country that still serve as inspiration to its people,” commented Mr. Faisal Al Sheikh, Head of Event Section, ADTA.

Fatimah Al Marzoqi, Talents and Creativity Center Supervisor, ADACH, also added:

“The former UAE President, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, often emphasized the importance of the past in nation building, once remarking that “A nation without a past is a nation without a present or future.” The ‘Heritage and Culture Island’ thus pays tribute to the history of the UAE by presenting what the country stands for, in an entertaining and educational manner that will enlighten and remind both Nationals and foreigners.”

Summer in Abu Dhabi runs at ADNEC from June 26th - August 18th 2008. Tickets are priced at AED30 for an adult and AED20 for a child between the ages of 4 – 16 (children under 4 receive free entry). For more information on Summer in Abu Dhabi visit http://www.summerinabudhabi.com/.
