Abu Dhabi Ports Company Reveals 3D Technology Behind MENA Region’s Only Semi-Automated Port
(12 December 2012)

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) showcased some of the world leading technology behind its new $7.2 billion Khalifa Port, which will be formally inaugurated later this week.

The company displayed its state-of-the-art 3D GIS simulator, used to track the movement of consignments within the mega port, at the 2012 ESRI Middle East and Africa User Conference (MEAUC).

The event, which runs from 10-12 December at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), is organsied in partnership with Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC). The exhibition and conference is one of the world’s leading events of its kind and attracts a wide range of GIS professionals and software users of ESRI technologies, the company behind the event.

Khalifa Port, which commenced commercial operations on 1st September, is one of the world’s most high tech ports. Its digital technology means it can handle the largest ships with greater efficiency and turnaround speeds. The port’s technology also allows faster processing of consignments through the port complex and out for onward distribution. This offers customers lower operating costs and a seamless service thanks to the latest technology installed at the company’s flagship port.

Said Saif Al Ketbi, Vice President – Information Technology, ADPC: “ESRI’s GIS 3D simulator technology, developed specifically for our needs, provides Khalifa Port with a real hi-tech competitive edge. Our technology allows us to offer lower operating costs to our customers as well as more efficient and faster handling services.”

ADPC’s 3D GIS software tracks the movement of all consignments at the port, starting from the cranes – the largest of their kind in the world - which unload the containers. The system then follows each container on its journey through all stages within the port complex until consignments exit for onward distribution by road, rail or air.
