Landmark report about the future of global renewable energy to be launched at World Future Energy Summit
(25 November 2012)

REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, will launch its much-anticipated report on the future of renewable energy during the International Renewable Energy Conference in Abu Dhabi (ADIREC), hosted by the sixth World Future Energy Summit (WFES) from 15 - 17 January 2013.

The Renewables Global Futures Report (GFR) is an easy-access publication that addresses perceptions and trends relating to the future of renewable energy and aims to answer the questions: where is all of this change leading, and where do we want it to lead?

Mr Naji El Haddad, Show Director of WFES 2013, said the fact that the influential organization REN21 had chosen ADIREC to release this landmark report confirms the international importance of WFES 2013.

"The biennial IREC conference recognizes renewable energy as a critical component of sustainable development, energy security and responsible action on climate change, and has gathered a growing community of government decision-makers, policymakers, investors and civil society organizations".

"IREC’s arrival in Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s largest oil producers, as a part of WFES 2013 clearly shows the progress the renewable energy movement has made, with the on-going success and achievements of WFES playing a significant role", said Mr El Haddad.

"REN21, one the world’s leading networks on renewable energy, clearly understands the global impact of WFES 2013, and we look forward to the launch of their comprehensive report during the summit".

Christine Lins, Executive Secretary of REN 21, said the GFR captures the status of current thinking about the long-term future of renewable energy, from 2020-2050, and lays out the range of credible possibilities.

"The Global Futures Report aims to elevate the global dialogue about our common energy future, which is the goal of the WFES and thus very fitting with the ADIREC and WFES".

"As the WFES and ADIREC highlight, many people are starting to recognize that have entered a period of major transition in our energy system".

"As showcased in the annual REN21 Global Status Report on Renewable Energy, current trends point to the rapid changes taking place in our energy systems. Renewables are getting cheaper and investment in renewable energy reached a record-high of 257 Billion USD in 2011, more than all net investment in fossil fuel capacity for the second year in a row. The new sister publication, the REN21 Renewables Global Futures Report, takes this further to provide an overview of what futures these current trends are leading us toward, what are the options and turning points in this transition", said Ms Lins.

"Critical questions today are focused on the speed at which our energy system is changing and the implications of this change for companies, business models, technologies, ownership, finance and policy".

"Although people are intrigued by this future, it can be difficult or time-consuming to read about different opinions and digest them. The GFR aims to provide a clear and concise synthesis of current thinking about the future of renewable energy", said Ms Lins.

"Similar to WFES and ADIREC, the GFR is a facilitative tool that provides a foundation for others to make their own arguments and assessments, but does not prescribe one point of view or make judgments. The GFR will inspire policymakers, and business leaders who will see new possibilities from the report and consider new actions towards a renewable energy future".

One of the most crucial sessions during ADIREC promises to be a discussion about the world energy context in 2013 and the contribution of renewable energy to electric power, heating and cooling, transport at the global, regional and national levels in the years and decades to come

"Both Fatih Birol, Chief Economist and Director Global Energy Economics Directorate, at the International Energy Agency, and Eric Martinot, Lead Author of the GFR, are confirmed as speakers for this session, so we expect some high-level outcomes that will direct future thinking in the sector", said Mr El Haddad.

The sixth World Future Energy Summit will be central to a number of high-profile events during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week from 13-17 January 2013 which also coincides with the third Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Titled ’Powering the Future of Energy Innovation’, WFES 2013 will be co-located with the first International Water Summit at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, which will also be the host venue for ADIREC.
