  • Record attempt to open the Yasalam 2012 Festival on Thursday October 25th

  •

To celebrate the opening of this year’s Yasalam festival, people from across the UAE are invited to come together on Thursday October 25th at Al Sahil Beach, Abu Dhabi to help break a Guinness World Record by building 681 perfect sandcastles in just one hour.

Open to all ages, the record attempt gives UAE residents and visitors a unique opportunity to make sandcastle history at a family friendly event that embodies the spirit of the Yasalam Festival; unity, creativity and fun for all.

Registration on Thursday October 25th commences at 3pm at the F1 Fan Zone, East Plaza, Abu Dhabi Corniche, with the record attempt beginning at 4.15pm sharp. Those hoping to take part should note that the perfect sandcastle ratio – according to LiveScience.com- is 100 buckets of sand to every 1 bucket of water. To qualify as a record breaker, Abu Dhabi’s sandcastles must be at least 2 feet high and 2 feet wide at the base, with four visible castle ‘towers’. For those keen to start practicing, Al Sahil beach is open seven days a week!

The UAE holds many world records, from displaying the world’s most expensive Christmas tree in 2010, to hosting the largest ever road safety lesson of 1,917 people, organized by Abu Dhabi Police GHQ and ‘Saaed’. In 2010, Guinness World Records certified Capital Gate as the World’s Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower. This followed the opening of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island; the largest indoor theme park on the planet.

Organizers of the sandcastle record attempt also confirmed those taking part would receive an official Guinness World Record ‘participation certificate’, and enter a prize draw for the chance to meet some of the artists performing at Yasalam’s Beats on the Beach, including Maya Diab, Cee Lo Green and Missy Elliot.

The Yasalam festival runs from October 25th to November 4th with music concerts, film events, creative workshops and the F1 fan zones at the Corniche, across the City, and on Yas Island. The full Yasalam programme is available at www.yasalam.ae

The 2012 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be held at Yas Marina Circuit on November 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Tickets can be purchased from www.yasmarinacircuit.com.
