16 Finalists Announced For TROPFEST Arabia 2012

  • Finalist selections signals two weeks until festival
  • Motion Picture Association trip to LA, Variety trip to Cannes and MBC internship up for grabs

    Sixteen finalists have been chosen from hundreds of submissions to compete in this year’s TROPFEST Arabia film festival. Renowned Tunisian actress Hend Sabry, this year’s co-director, will be announcing the winning film live at the event in front of thousands of film fans on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche after a night of films and entertainment on 26th October.

    More than 200 short films were submitted from all across the Middle East and North Africa, with the 16 finalists selected by TROPFEST director, John Polson and co-director Hend Sabry based on creativity, originality and their use of the TROPFEST Signature Item (TSI).

    This year’s finalists represent eight countries and include: Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Undamageable’, Mohamed Hussen Anwar; Lebanese filmmaker of ‘One Last Goodbye’, Nadim Laham; Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Birth Certificate’, Reem Sherif Al Kammach; Moroccan filmmaker of ‘Two, six’ and ‘Abjad’, Khaled Ettaki Elboumeshouli; Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Bite of Bread’, Eslam Rasmy; Libyan filmmaker of ‘80’, Muhannad Lamin; Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Two’, Mokhtar Talaat; Iraqi filmmaker of ‘Eclipse’, Muhannad Kareem Kazar; Egyptian filmmaker of ‘For Sale’, Ehab Mustapha; Lebanese filmmaker of ‘Made for Two’, Ray Haddad; Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Feather of Freedom’, Sahar El Daly; Jordanian filmmaker of ‘Black & White’, Rama Muhanna; Lebanese filmmaker of ‘Who am I?’, Ali Salloum; Emirati filmmaker of ‘The Signature’, Eman Al Barakani and Egyptian filmmaker of ‘Dunya’, Shaimaa Farouk.

    Judging the films live on the evening of the event is a panel of renowned Arab filmmakers including Emirati animator and Chairman of Lammtara, Mohammed Saeed Harib; Kuwaiti film producer and director, Amer Al Zuhair; Jordanian actress and producer, Seba Mubarak; Syrian actress and filmmaker, Kinda Alloush; Egyptian writer and director, Amr Salama and Lebanese musician and composer and Khaled Mouzanar.

    The finalists will be competing for a variety of fantastic prizes, with the winner receiving US$12,500 and a trip to Los Angeles to meet film industry professionals courtesy of the Motion Picture Association; the filmmaker in second place will receive US$7,500 and a trip to meet industry professionals at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival courtesy of twofour54 and Variety magazine, with third place receiving a prize of US$5,000 and an internship with MBC2. The Best Actor and Best Actress will each be awarded US$2,500.
