The Zayed Future Energy Prize has launched a UAE-wide competition inviting school students to create a mascot for the new Global High Schools Prize category. The winner of the Mascot Competition will have his or her creation represent the category in print and online media. Moreover, the winner will be invited to attend the 2012 award ceremony scheduled to take place January 15, 2013, during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
To participate in the competition, students in the UAE, aged 7-18, arerequiredto create a mascot reflecting renewable energy and sustainability. The mascot should alsopromote UAE heritage and will serveas a visual representation of the prize category.
Students can submit hand-sketched images toinfo@zayedfutureenergyprize.com. The deadline for submissionsis October 18, 2012.
The winner will be announced on the last day of the Abu Dhabi Science Festivalon October 20 at 12noonatthe Zayed Future Energy Prize stand.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize awards five different categories: Large Corporation, Non -GovernmentalOrganisation, Small and Medium Enterprise, Lifetime Achievement Award for an individual and the newly launched Global High Schools prize.
Unlike all other categories that are judged based on already existing demonstrable successes, the Global High Schools Prize asks high schools from five different regions in the world (The Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania) to submit sustainability projects for funding consideration.
The proposed sustainability project needs to demonstrate how it can help the school produce energy from renewable sources, make the school more energy efficient or help the students become more engaged in sustainability actions like recycling. At least two students need to be involved in creating the submission. The proposed project needs to demonstrate leadership, innovation, long term vision and impact.
Alongside the four other prize categories, the proposed High School projects are assessed and reviewed by the Review Committee and the Selection Committeemembers.The final phase of evaluation takes place during the meeting of the jury.Up to five winning schools from around the world stand to win a maximum of US$100,000 each.
