Abu Dhabi International Airport Passenger Travel Surges in Summer 2012
(29 September 2012)

As the World Route Development Forum opens its doors at ADNEC, event host Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) today released the traffic report for Abu Dhabi International Airport for the months of July and August 2012.

August saw a robust 20% growth over last year’s figures with passenger traffic reaching 1.3 million. Cargo traffic was also on the rise reaching 46,376 tonnes, with an increase of 16.4% compared to the month of August in 2011.

The traffic reports also showed a 16.7% growth in passenger traffic in the month of July 2012, with more than 1.35 million passengers passing through the airport - the highest monthly numbers in the airport’s history. Cargo traffic also reflected a parallel increase in July, reaching 50,371 tonnes, representing an increase of 27.7% compared to the same month last year.

Total arrival and departure transfers also reported a significant increase in July of 42.6% and 37.1% respectively, reflecting the growing strength of the airport’s connectivity and positioning it as a key aviation hub in the region.

Eng. Ahmed Al Haddabi, Chief Operating Officer at ADAC, commented: "July and August this year have been exceptional months with the airport seeing its largest volume of passenger traffic in its history. With a year-to-date growth of 21.5%, ADAC is one of the world’s fastest growing airport operators. It is encouraging to see in the first half of this year that passenger increase was sustained as we enter the second half of the year. The positive performance in passenger traffic this summer reflects the attractiveness of the Emirate as a business and tourism destination with more passengers choosing Abu Dhabi International Airport as their gateway to the rest of the world." "Together with Etihad’s additional flights to Bangkok and new destinations such as Lagos in Nigeria, growth is also attributed to the strong summer season that all airlines in Abu Dhabi International Airport are experiencing. During this busy period, Abu Dhabi International Airport continues to provide high quality experiences and services to passengers," Al Haddabi continued.

Bangkok continues to register the highest growth with a 49% increase in traffic, followed by London, Doha, and Manila to be the top four routes from Abu Dhabi International Airport during July and August, with the fifth route being Jeddah for July and Cairo for August 2012.
