Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), the master developer of tourism, cultural and residential projects in Abu Dhabi, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the MEED’s UAE National award for its Saadiyat Construction Village. The project was nominated by HLG Leighton Contracting which is in contention for the GCC Metito Social Project of the Year award.
The Saadiyat Construction Village is a model of best practice that has been built to house up to 20,000 workers employed by contractors during the construction of Saadiyat island. Its facilities have set a new benchmark for workers’ living standards in the region. It currently houses more than 10,000 workers and covers 40 hectares, and facilities include shops, Internet booths, recreational parks, laundry facilities, dining areas, and sports and leisure facilities such as a cricket pitch, multi-purpose courts and landscaped gardens.
The Saadiyat Construction Village is built with environmental and sustainable factors in mind, which include a solar hot water system, natural light via windows and sun pipes, energy efficient appliances, insulated roof and wall panels to reduce heat gain, and the use of recycled materials in construction.
The MEED Quality Awards are the only awards programme in the GCC to recognise completed quality projects. The Saadiyat Construction Village was judged by an independent panel consisting of respected experts in the projects industry. The MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2012 selected the national winners on the basis of their economic, social and environment impact, as well as innovations and achievements in design, engineering and construction.
GCC winners will be announced at the annual MEED Quality Awards for Projects on May 21, 2012 at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa, UAE.
