The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) prestigious ‘Tourism For Tomorrow Awards’, which recognise best practice in sustainable tourism within the Travel & Tourism industry worldwide, will next year be presented in Abu Dhabi.
The awards will form part of Abu Dhabi’s April hosting of WTTC’s 13th annual Global Summit.
“Given the growing concern about natural and cultural resources, these awards are particularly important to WTTC and provide the Council with the opportunity of promoting and partnering with the industry leaders in responsible tourism, highlighting the prime examples of best practice,” said David Scowsill, President & CEO, WTTC.
In 2003, WTTC launched its vision statement – the Blueprint For New Tourism.
“Outlining a multi-stakeholder vision, the Blueprint For New Tourism looks beyond short-term considerations and focuses on benefits, not only for people who travel, but also for people in the communities they visit, and for their respective natural, social and cultural environments,” added Scowsill.
The awards fall into four categories: Global Tourism Business; Conservation; Community Benefit and Destination Stewardship. Judging is by an independent panel including some of the world’s most authoritative experts of sustainable development and a stringent three-step process involving on-site verification visits by the experts.
The WTTC’s 13th Global Summit, which will bring together almost 1,000 industry leaders to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing Travel & Tourism, is being hosted by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority and Etihad Airways. The decision to hold the Summit in the United Arab Emirates’ capital was based on Abu Dhabi’s compelling presentation, the enthusiasm of government and industry agencies, accessibility of the destination, a high standard of capability and evidence of green tourism growth as a key development strategy.
Entries are open from 3 September until 26 November 2012 for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
