The National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), the Number One Bank in the UAE, will once again be joining millions globally on March 31, 2012 to observe Earth Hour.
NBAD, which is committed to sustainability, proudly joins the movement for the third year in a row.
Earth Hour, which began in 2007, aims to highlight the significance of global warming and other environmental issues by encouraging individuals and organisations to turn off their lights for 60 minutes.
The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City is the official coordinator of 2012Earth Hour for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. ‘Earth Hour’ is a globally-celebrated event organised by Emirates Wildlife Society in cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature EWS-WWF.
“Supporting Earth Hour is in line with NBAD’s Corporate Sustainability strategy,” says Belinda Scott, the Senior Manager of CSR at NBAD. “Earth Hour is not just about turning off for one hour, our objective is to create awareness and tell the community that everyone has a part to play in being sustainable. We aim to position NBAD’s strong and highly regarded profile to serve as an example for the wider society to adopt a sustainable and responsible attitude toward the environment.”
Starting at 8:30 p.m. on March 31, NBAD will turn off all lights at its 30-storey head office, One NBAD Tower, an Abu Dhabi landmark; as well as the Bank’s Khalidiya office in Abu Dhabi and several branches and offices in the other emirates.
“Our CSR team is leveraging NBAD’s participation and support for Earth Hour to encourage our employees, and their families and friends, to think about the environment in their day-to-day lives and adopt habits that aid conservation of our precious resources,” Ms. Scott says.
NBAD is the first UAE Bank to have publish an annual Sustainability Report, this year marking the third consecutive year of publication, due to be released with the Bank’s Annual Report.
NBAD was the only Bank from the Middle East of 17 banks from across the globe, shortlisted for the Financial Times/IFC Sustainable Bank of the Year Award last year.
“Earth Hour is just one part of NBAD’s strategically integrated approach to embedding sustainability into core business practices and promoting the culture of sustainability,” Ms. Scott says.
