Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), the operator of Abu Dhabi’s five airports, announced today its plans to raise its recycled waste target to 25% by 2011. The announcement follows the company’s achievement of last year’s target to recycle 18% of the waste generated at Abu Dhabi International Airport and the company’s Headquarters.
This year’s waste management strategy will be accompanied by a company-wide recycling awareness campaign, expanding it gradually to all 5 airports. The campaign aims to inspire and motivate all the members of the airport community to play their role to achieve the 25% target.
Jim Bennett, ADAC CEO, commented: “We have today raised the bar in environmental sustainability in the region’s airports industry. As a responsible corporate citizen and an aspiring leader in airport sustainability, we have applied environmental and waste management policies with an objective to recycle 25% of waste. ADAC’s Corporate Responsibility initiatives showed positive results in 2010, including our waste management strategy, and I am confident of their continued success this year.”
The recycled waste includes wood, cardboard, plastic and paper. The different materials have either been reused within the company or transferred to other organisations such as Masdar, which recycles ADAC’s wood waste for reuse in landscaping. The company is currently working in conjunction with Environment Authority and in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group to continuously improve its sustainability performance.
ADAC recently joined the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group and was elected to the General Secretariat of the Group. The Group meets regularly to develop and shape the sustainability initiatives for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
