All of Abu Dhabi Airports Company’s (ADAC) five airports will take part in this year’s Earth Hour tonight, Saturday 26 March, between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm, joining other prominent buildings across the Emirate by dimming or turning off lights to raise awareness of the need to save energy across the globe.
This green initiative from ADAC comes as part of the joint collaboration between the leading airports company and its major stakeholders in the Emirate including Masdar and Etihad Airways. The joint activities between ADAC and Etihad Airways include an environmental presentation; entitled ‘Environmental Awareness: Going Beyond Earth Hour’, delivered by H.H. Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Ali Al Nuaimi, Environmental Advisor to the Government of Ajman; who is infamously known as the ‘Green Sheikh’, and an art competition for children designed to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the planet’s scarce natural resources among the younger generations. In addition, ADAC has partnered with Masdar on the communication for Earth Hour and on future initiatives related to environmental conservation using elements of their ‘START’ campaign.
ADAC’s five airports: Abu Dhabi International, Al Ain International, Al Bateen Executive, Delma and Sir Bani Yas, will participate by dimming, or switching off, non essential lighting in airports runways, terminal buildings and management offices. International aviation standards will be maintained throughout the hour while the airports are operated within the highest safety and security measures. The participation is a key part of ADAC’s ongoing environmental awareness 2011 initiatives that include educating staff on energy and waste management practices, and announcing a challenging target of recycling 25% of waste from ADAC airports by the end of the year.

Earth Hour has become a global environmental movement with more than 50 million people from 128 different countries expected to participate by dimming their properties’ lights at 8.30pm on Saturday 26th March.
