(16 April 2011)
March alone saw 983,000 passengers pass through the airport

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) today announced that more than 2.8 million passengers have passed through Abu Dhabi International Airport during the first quarter of 2011. This passenger traffic figure represents an increase of 9.4% from same period last year.

Between the months of January and March, the airport welcomed 28,724 flights carrying 2,820,045 passengers. Cargo traffic was also on the rise, with an increase of 9% throughout the three months.

The month of March particularly saw a significant surge in traffic with passenger numbers reaching 983,000 which is an increase of 13% in comparison to the same period last year. The company also revealed a 6% increase in aircraft movements along with an impressive 16% incline in transported cargo for the month.

Eng. Ahmed Al Haddabi, Senior Vice President, Airports Operations at ADAC commented:

“The first quarter of this year has been yet another display of the positive progress Abu Dhabi Airports Company has been making. The continuous flow of passengers through the Emirate remains strong and we expect momentum to remain as we draw closer to the busier summer season. Preparations for this season have commenced with the recent addition of direct flights to Hong Kong, via Cathay Pacific starting in June, to the list of destinations served by the airport and the completion of the Terminal 1 refurbishments later this quarter.”

London, Bangkok, Doha, Manila, and Jeddah rank as the top routes thus far; accounting for 21% of the total traffic. Notably, flights to Jeddah have increased by an impressive 48% in comparison with the same time last year. Far East, Middle East and Europe continue to be the top regions generating the most traffic from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

During the first quarter of 2011 Abu Dhabi International Airport has welcomed new routes and destinations and added new flight frequencies for its existing and new airlines. The Capital’s airport welcomed VAustralia with its nonstop services to Sydney, Etihad Airways launched its new route to Bangalore, and Air India Express added flights to Amritsar and Mangalore, contributing to the strong traffic growth recorded at the airport.
