(31 March 2012)
For the third consecutive year, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) took part in the global campaign, Earth Hour 2012, in an initiative to raise awareness within the community and across the globe about reducing energy consumption. In line with its commitment to supporting this international movement, ADAC will be holding various awareness activities to drive employees and community engagement about saving the scarce resources of the environment.
To mark the internationally celebrated Earth Hour campaign, ADAC employees gathered together on Wednesday evening, March 28th, to light organic candles and sign pledges inspired by this year’s theme (I Will If You Will) on specially designed plantable seed papers in Al Bateen Executive Airport.
On Saturday, 31st March, between 08:30 pm and 09:30 pm, ADAC’s five airports: Abu Dhabi International, Al Ain International, Al Bateen Executive, Delma and Sir Bani Yas Islands, participated by dimming, or switching off, non essential lighting in airports’ terminal buildings and management offices. Additionally the lights for second runway of Abu Dhabi International airport were switched off during the same hour. Local and international aviation standards were maintained throughout the hour while the airports are operated within the highest safety and security measures.
Eng. Ahmad Al Haddabi, Chief Operating Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports Company commented: "Corporate responsibility is a strategic driver of long-term value for ADAC and managing our day to day operations in a responsible and efficient manner is essential for running a successful and truly sustainable business. To achieve this, we need to be considerate of the environment in all aspects of our operations and monitor how we use scarce resources such as water and energy. Each one of us has a role in saving the environment, one switch and one tap at a time."
The awareness program also includes a specifically designed art competition, initiated under the patronage of Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Ali Al Nuaimi, known as the Green Sheikh, for children with special needs in order to give them the opportunity to express their thoughts and experiences on the challenges that the planet is facing.
The winning artworks will be displayed at Abu Dhabi International Airport Terminals. This art competition is also supported by the Centre of Waste Management (CWM) in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain Private Centre of Care and Rehabilitation.
