ZU Student Designs Mubadala World Tennis Championship Trophy
(27 December 2011)

The winner of the LASVIT Trophy Design Competition for this year’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship has been announced as Alya al-Zaabi, a local student from the Art and Design department at Zayed University.

The competition organized for the first time in the tournament’s history gave Emirati students enrolled in the Department of Art and Design at Zayed University the opportunity to submit designs for a new Mubadala World Tennis Championship Trophy that truly reflected the unique culture of the United Arab Emirates.

In recent weeks LASVIT has brought Alya’s winning trophy design to life in a traditional glass workshop in the Czech Republic before unveiling it to Alya and World Number one, Novak Djokovic, during a visit to Mubadala’s Fit For the Future Interactive Zone on the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

The trophy which has brilliantly been designed in golden and amber tones, has been hand blown and symbolizes both enjoyment and triumph, will now feature in the Tennis Village at Zayed Sports City before being presented to the winner of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in front of a sell-out crowd and showcased on television to more than 120 million households around the world.

As Shatha Al Romaithi of FLASH Entertainment, event owners of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, explained, the competition was part of the championship’s commitment to the local community and tennis in the UAE; "Community engagement is at the heart of this championship and through this competition we have been able to go beyond the tennis and sports fans by engaging the artistic Emirati community and offering them a ?once in a lifetime opportunity’. Congratulations to Alya for her inspired design of a truly iconic trophy." "Whether it’s future tennis stars getting to go on court with their heroes or a local design student given the chance to profile their beautiful work and showcase Emirati culture to global audiences in their millions, we are proud to be able to pave the way for local Emirati talent to shine whether it is on court or off court." Commenting on winning the design Alya al-Zaabi stated: "I am extremely honoured to have won this competition and cannot wait until the trophy is held aloft by the eventual winner of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. I drew inspiration for my design from the "thorn bracelet" which is often worn by Emirati women during joyous occasions, since I think it truly signifies the connection between tradition, beauty and triumph." Commenting on the announcement Filip Simek, Area Manager of LASVIT said: "LASVIT is honoured to participate in this important sports event in Abu Dhabi while working in partnership with Alya al-Zaabi from Abu Dhabi Zayed University. The fine blend of art, sport, and Emirati culture makes this collaboration an especially meaningful and memorable project for all involved." Having witnessed the unveiling and met the designer of the new Mubadala World Tennis Championship Trophy, World Number 1, Novak Djokovic said; "This championship clearly means a lot to the local community. I’m really looking forward to making my debut in Abu Dhabi and playing for this beautiful trophy. I’ll certainly be doing my best to get my hands on this new trophy and taking home a reminder of my first time playing in the Emirate." LASVIT thought that the fusion between Emirati culture, art and sport creates the perfect recipe for an unforgettable trophy that will leave a lasting impact on the feted Mubadala World Tennis Championship this year. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer - the best tennis players in the world - will compete over the Mubadala World Tennis Championship trophy this year.

LASVIT will be providing Alya with a replica of the trophy and will be inviting her and guests to enjoy a VIP experience on the final day of the tournament.
