(18 April 2011)
Spectators Excited By Potential Of This Fast And Sophisticated Clean Transport Technology

Masdar City, one of the world’s most sustainable developments, today welcomed the Superbus, a groundbreaking innovation in public transport.

The potential of this fast and sophisticated clean technology transportation system thrilled spectators who viewed a prototype of the Superbus at Masdar City, in its first demonstration outside of The Netherlands.

Alan Frost,Director of Masdar City, and Huib de Bliek, Counsellor/Deputy Head of Mission - Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, were present at the occasion.

The six-wheel 12-door futuristic Superbus measuring15metres hasa 23-seat capacity.Fully powered by electricity and constructed with light carbon fibre materials to make it more energy efficient, the Superbus integrates the speedand service of a fast train with the flexibility, affordability and comfort of a roadvehicle.

Alan Frost said: “The growing reputation of Masdar City as a clean-technology cluster, and Abu Dhabi as a global hub of the renewable energy and sustainability industry, made it a natural choice for the Superbus’ demonstration outside of The Netherlands. It’s only fitting that this vehicle was charged for the first time by renewable energy at the Masdar City.”

Masdar City already has expertise in clean transportation technologies with an electric vehicle automobile pilot project ongoing, as well as the automated, battery-powered Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system.

“While there are notalks between Masdar City and the developers of Superbus regarding its applicability as a transportation solution for the city, we share a common commitment to developing and a passion for testing revolutionary and commercially viable solutions to address the clean transportation challenges of today and tomorrow,” Frost added.

Masdar City is known for its cutting-edge, driverless PRT vehicles, which are guided by computer software and magnets embedded in the pavement along a 1,700-meter track between two stations at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology campus at Masdar City.

In the future, Abu Dhabi’s metro and light rail networks will pass through Masdar City and provide transport within the city and link it to the rest of the metropolitan area.

Masdar City is one of five integrated units within Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s multifaceted initiative advancing the development, commercialization and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions.
