Etihad Airways Welcomes IRENA Home
(11 April 2011)

Commemorating the milestone achievement of the United Arab Emirates through the recent confirmation of Abu Dhabi as the Headquarters of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, today announced that it will display the logo of the Agency on their aircraft fleet during the month of April. IRENA, an intergovernmental international agency, promotes the widespread adoption of renewable energy worldwide.

The Confirmation of the UAE as Headquarter of IRENA took place at the historic first Assembly from 4-5 April at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). Approximately 90 high-level ministers, 800 delegates, business leaders and non-governmental organisations from over 150 countries attended the event. The Assembly of IRENA also selected the Agency’s first Director General, Adnan Amin.

In his capacity as President of the first Session of the Assembly, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change and Chief Executive of Masdar said: “We are delighted that the UAE national airline Etihad Airways has opted to commemorate the first IRENA General Assembly in Abu Dhabi by placing the IRENA logo on its planes. Through its expanding fleet and worldwide reputation for excellent service, Etihad will also be a global ambassador for climate change and renewable energy.”

James Hogan, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “We are honoured to display the logo of IRENA, an organisation that represents the future of energy, on our aircraft.

“This move reflects our dedication to alternative sustainable fuels for our industry and we believe it will raise awareness of this commitment across our expanding network. Etihad places a strong emphasis on renewable energy within its carbon management strategy and we are delighted to fly the IRENA logo as a symbol of pride for Abu Dhabi and the UAE.”

On his part, Adnan Amin said: “I would like to thank Etihad Airways for its support for IRENA. Over the past eighteen months, Etihad has helped ensure the success of our meetings in the lead up to the Assembly and I believe they share this celebration with us.”
Etihad uses carbon offsets in addition to utilising its in-flight video to inform and educate the public on the importance of renewable energy.
